Does anyone know how to convert a DAE object to something usable?  Like .obj or .3ds?

Try Blender or anything else that reads COLLADA files and can export OBJ.

Results will vary depending on the source app, the target app, and COLLADA version.

I seem to recall MeshLab is all right for DAE to OBJ conversion...

DAZ Studio 3, Carrara, and Blender can all read COLLADA files and export as OBJ. DS3 and Blender are also free.

Poser can too...well, Poser Pro can. I can't recall if Poser 8 does but you've probably solved your issue by now so I'll shut up. :)
