Is there a setting to prevent the last render from briefly displaying before a new render begins in Poser 8?

No.

Nop, you'll have to live with it :)
Sometimes I cringe when I have to stare at a failed render until the new one starts rendering. If you cancel a render though then it won't show. This didn't use to be the case and I would cancel when I saw something I didn't like and could go back and compare, can't do that anymore though. I guess the PTB of Poser decided this was best for us.

In Poser 8, you can delete one or more of the ".tmp" files in the render cache
they are located in something like:
C:/Documents and Settings/**YourUserName/**Application Data/Poser/8.0/RenderCache
You can't do this while Poser is open, as they are locked then
