I love a challenge. Brain working overtime. Do I have something in my collection, or will I have to go out and find something? Hmmmm.

This one is more about perspective, but there is a person down there to give a small sense of scale.

Wow only 11 days into the challenge and so many awesome posts already! I better get on it! Great challenge, I am itching to get my three. Looking forward to seeing how many perspectives we can present on this subject :)

@Carin        Great challenge, this one is really going to make us think outside the box! Beautiful granddaughter and an outstanding tree! Looks like it would be fun to climb ;) Great shot!

@Mies        What an awesome beginning to the challenge! I love this scale shot, and the subject is so interesting. Great shot!

@Mario     Awesome perspective scale on your first shot, the riders look so small against this beautiful natural backdrop. And I love all of the detail in your nature shot! Great eye :)

@Christo    Perfect timing in these airshow captures! Cool idea for this scale challenge, beautiful abstract shots, my favourite is the last one because it looks like he got fired on and hes outrunning it! Great shots :)

@Maria     That is a shot to cherrish :') A beautiful scale shot, thank you for sharing this sweet memory

@Andrew      I like your choice of B&W on this one, it really draws the attention to your scale subjects here! Great find :)

@Mark      Beautiful beach capture! This reminds me of my recent trip to Tofino where I touched the ocean for the first time! Awesome scale capture, the people look like ants!

@Yvonne      Perfect timing for this great shot! It looks like a cold day, that splash might be more appreciated on a sunny day haha Great shot, and perfect upload for the challenge :)

@Leonie      I love that the wall in the foreground is the focus, and the ttiinnnyyy person waaaaay back is only part of the details. Cool and colourful addition to this months challenge

I guess there is certainly a sense of scale when looking at the universe. Except the whole of this space is only about 18 inches. It's powder sprayed across a black background, done last week for another photographic challenge. Not the photo I finally entered but the one I should have entered.

I do so enjoy a challenge. ;-D

Another "scaly" image. You have to look hard but there are two men hanging on that wall: a guy in a green shirt (easy to find) abseiling down and a guy in a black shirt (much harder to locate) climbing up, hanging by his hands. And if you look very closely to the top of the photo you see by their legs that there are people standing on the bridge looking down.

mountmous posted Fri, 14 October 2011 at 8:14 AM

I was allowed 3 images, right?

It looks like the parents have abandoned their child completely in the midst of this Venetian stronghold. In fact they are in the trenches (or what're-they-called) on the right. Just after I took this shot they surfaced again.

And now I realise I chose three images from three different countries :-D

@Carin    Your son makes this fence look small, I bet it goes much higher on most people haha great perspective and a BEAUTIFUL giraffe :)
@Yvonne   Wow all three shots are amazing, great captures from around the world :) I LOVE the contrasting textures of the rocks, bridge, and trees in your second shot. I didnt see the people until you pointed them out haha and I am glad the parents were around for the third! :)

Today I have the day off, and my husband is at work, so I am going to try and get at least one shot for this challenge! Great work everyone :)

I wanted to include another photo of Matryoshka with a better perspective, but I preferred to post this, even though the dolls seem to be many soldiers in a row, because the reflections in the stand and shadows on the wall are the best! :-)

TomDart posted Tue, 18 October 2011 at 9:54 AM

This is called a "fossil plant" but they have no fossils for sale...actually it is a coal fired electricity plant, coal being the fossil.

Scale has changed.  Eight smokestacks to the right, old polluters and now relics unused, then larger ones, much much larger two stacks and with those and the generators it did more output than with the 8 smaller ones.  Now,  smaller again but still huge..to the left is a "scrubber", cleaning all the bad stuff from the smoke and all going into the air is steam.

To stand near the plant makes a person feel very, very small.  This was shot from a moving vehicle some distance away.

The plant is offline for the time while cleanup of spilt ash residue is being done. A defective storage area broke loose a while back, flooding a large area with ash.

Meisiekind posted Tue, 18 October 2011 at 10:31 AM

Oh wow Tom - that is indeed a huge difference. Thank you for sharing the image as well as the very interesting facts!

Neat one, Clive.  This is a fine example of why a photo sometimes does not convey the sense of distance, scale, and elevation we know it is there.A photo does not have the senses and full landscape we have and something for comparison is needed in the image.

Oh no! I must not think at that! But now you mention it, Helle.......I can see it....creepy :D! LOL!

I apologize if I insert a fourth photo, but I could not help but to show you the difference between two aubergines! The smallest is grown (a bit, actually) in the garden of my sister, but the sudden cold and rain have shrunken it!  :-)

A most beautiful capture, and great for this challenge, Maria.

Also funny to see this :).

Thank you, Mies! I did not able to resist to the temptation to insert this picture! ;-)

I don't usually color on my pictures, but I REALLY want you to have a sense of the scale here!  Not only of the rocks, but of the prairie.  If you've never been in the American Midwest, you just can't imagine how vast it is.  Visualize yourself in this environment, and turn around and around.  The entire place is as flat as what you see here, minus the rocks, and you can see absolutely forever!   I know it's tough to see in such a small format, so I've brightened the places where Bill and the car are in the picture, and clearly labeled them!  LOL!

What a huge area, Tara!
There you really see how small we humans are. As insignificant in a sense.
Thanks for sharing, it's an amazing photo.

helanker posted Sun, 30 October 2011 at 11:52 AM

Yeah, that is indeed HUGE, Tara. One gets humble looking at it.

cfulton posted Sun, 30 October 2011 at 1:51 PM

That definately gives a sense of scale, as you say, for the vastness of the prairie too!

Here's another one ... Bridal Veil Valls in Utah.  603 feet from top to bottom.  Notice the people on the bridge at the bottom.  :)

Here's the last one.  I was thinking about you all while we were on our trip, and took this one specifically for this forum thread!  :)  This is Picture Gorge, Oregon, in the John Day Fossil Beds.

Look for the red car for a sense of scale.

Sorry I haven't been around ... but Forum threads weren't high on my list while we were driving around the country!  We did 5300 miles, and I haven't figured out yet how many photos I took.  I've been through this thread now that we're back, and thoroughly enjoyed it!  :)
