here is my render settings

those are idl precalc dots.  one may decrease IDL settings compared with earlier version(s) to get similar render results with decreased render time.

meltz posted Wed, 30 November 2011 at 4:55 PM

ok so do i just continue to let it render? Im abit of a newbie when it comes to some of this.

yes, one allows it to finish up with the scatter screen, then the precalc (red-dot) screen, then render.  your settings are not so extreme as to cause excessive render times, excepting in the presence of ray-traced shadows and transparencies IMVHO.

Ditto.  IDL pre-calculations.

Thanls so much, i am still learning =-)

The idl will make a pass with those little dots then a final render pass where they all go away ;).

Unless you are incorporating SSS which precedes the final render pass after IDL.

What does SSS do ?

Sub Surface Scatter.  There is further discussion about it over at the RuntimeDNA forum.  Plenty of examples and recommended usage.

When you want the full house?
First your lights will be calculated
Then the IDL pass ( the one with the red dots)
Then the SSS pass

And finally the render.

But you ave full control, just read the manual carefully.

This is the sublink of the general discussion about P9/PP2012.  You will find several SSS postings.

Also, look out for posts by BagginsBill, he is the Guru of Rendering, and has made many highly informative posts about IDL settings and the balance between speed and quality. He is also the king of SSS settings.

I just bought PP2012 too.  If you want to be amazed and the progress they have made just take the default new scene, hit Crtl-Y and turn on Indirect lighting and Sub Surface Scattering, then render.

I know it really is amazing just how much better the renders come out just by clicking on those.
