I really like poser 7 and so use to it I am uneasy about moving up.   is there much of a differance that would warrant moving up ?

newer version(s) renders faster and IDL is alot better.  in addition, who supports poser 7 any more?  maybe those guys who like to use lite sets with 30 - 50 lites.  it doesn't even get that fake on a movie set.

DO IT!

DO IT NOW!

I went from Poser 7 to Poser Pro 2010 and then to Poser Pro 2012.

I keep Poser 7 for ShaderSpider....

I loves me my Poser Pro 2012.

DO IT!

The thing that I like most about Poser 9 is that it does a lot better job of Preview Rendering.  There are a lot more options and you can use textures up to 4,096 by 4,096, and have some shadows as well.

As primarily and animation buff, I can generate good looking hi rez frames very quickly.

Less then 1 second per frame at 1600 by 1000.

I couldn't do this in my old Poser, and had to settle for a much lower quality render, or endure hours of rendering time.

I love it; I'm going back and redoing all my old videos with the new version.

Stuff looks better and works better and heaps quicker (particularly if you have a 64bit OS). The software interface has a lot of thoughtful improvements. I moved from P7 to PP2010 to PP2012... the most significant move - to me! - was that final upgrade, only because it is SO much better in so many ways!

I am moving from P7 to PP12 screw P9. ;) The interface will take time to understand but the speed and use of IDL is a pleasure.

I am in the process of updating my folders to deal with PP12 only cause I had gotten so use to the flow with P7 but with PP12 I need to clean up my system of runtimes. Mostly it's the pose folders that need the fixing. ;)

Mind you PP12/9 is still buggy is some area's like anything with this symbol # the png won't show up. Either I wait for the update or change the name to anything with out the # symbol. But they are working on these problems and soon they will be gone.

So ya, it's time for you to update.

The one thing that I'm having problems with is loading the textures upside down.

I have to import the textures with the setting at 1024 or below and then change it after they are loaded.

@MikeMoss

Do you still have upside down textures after installing SR1?

It has been a while I had this happening also, but not lately..

I'm not sure that I have installed Service Release 1, I'll check, but I don't think I knew it was out.

Thanks for the heads up.

Didn't have it installed downloading it now.

Thanks again.

You can get it here Mike.

One of the corrected features is the upside down textures at higher rez.  Look at the readme for the list of corrections.

I went from P7 to PP2012 about 3 weeks ago. I did not change operating systems or computers, so this version is the 32 bit one. Without the intermediate step of going to PP2010, it's a bit of a leap, but not so much in terms of how things work or where they are located or organized. The big leap for me was the IDL, GC, and subsurface scattering. I used Bagginsbill's VSS for all my skin shaders and while they work in PP2012, he recommends others. I have experimented now for three weeks to get this down with the results you see here. The leftmost render was in P7, the middle with the scene rendered in PP2012 untouched, and the rightmost with all the tricks turned on. Some postwork on all of them. I'm still not real happy, but the potential for improvement is certainly there. These three have raytracing for the hair turned off. I'll post one other picture that has it turned on below. That feature seems faster now for hair at least.

I would encourage you to go to RUNTIMEDNA and read the forums over there about shaders and such to see how you need to change them. With all these features turned on, expect render times to end up about the same as they were in P7 or become longer. If you don't use all the features, I think there is a noticeable reduction in render time.

I hope this helps.

Mark@poser posted Tue, 20 December 2011 at 7:09 PM

This one has raytracing for the hair turned on, but it's a different hair.

hborre posted Tue, 20 December 2011 at 7:20 PM

One major component about upgrading to the pro series is chiefly relearning how to work with lighting and light sets.  Older sets created for previous Poser versions no longer apply.  You now get real shader response to lighting.  This means rethinking how to properly illuminate your scene using light emitters combined with the different lights available.  This also means less intensities and fewer sets than before.

Mark,

Looking good

I don't see a sphere in your bg. IDL needs stuff to bounce off from. Even a blank sphere will get you results. HDRI's are the best but even old IBL's will effect your renders nicely. Controlling specular is the hard part (for me).

alfaseed sure came out with a winner, no?

Thanks for the tip. I'm still experimenting.

I guess we should also explain to those who don't know. The alfaseed product referred to is the hair in the last picture. I bought it when it came out but it is so "finely meshed" I rarely used it in P7 and never with raytracing on. Now in PP 2012, it's not such a big deal.

Thanks

The hair is indeed a monster but, mostly at the load/delete time. I uncheck "emit light" and leave the rest on. Hair does not need to "emit" in most cases and loses the dreaded IDL precalculation*.* I find this bearable at rendertime and the shadows are great to have finally.*

I'm going from 7 to PRO2012 this year.  I get it for Christmas...yay...I tried 9 and I LOVED the interface.  Although I wanted a 64 bit system so I went for the Amazon lightning black friday cyber monday 1/2 off deal :)  That's why I chose Pro 2012 over 9..I wanted 64 bit support cause I got all kinds of RAM for Christmas too.

I would definately upgrade if you can afford to and get the IDL lights going.  And that SSS is super cool if you get a character from say PDesign...where they already did it for you....

I didn't want to leave 7, but when I got to looking at the interface I wanted to use Poser even more....I think you would like it!
