Hi all,
Over on the DAZ3d forum (http://forum.daz3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=161303&highlight=hunting+pigtail+hair), Shaaelia posted a request for information regarding a pigtail hair figure looking like the following picture:
There are many pigtail models on the market but they seem to be either a different style, with the tails lower down rather than high on the head, or the tails are curly or bushy or more like fountains. Simple pigtails seem to be scarce.
The conclusion was that there were no commercially available ones that exactly match the image.
Twin Tails by Maya comes pretty close in terms of shape, but it is an old model; it's a prop not a figure and has limited motion of the tails and the tails do not move independently and there are no high quality texture sets available for this model.
Hr-060 by Ali is also pretty close in terms of shape. It is a figure, the tails do move independently and there are some nice morphs; this flexibility and modifiyability are features that are essential if the hair figure is to be widely useful. However, it does have some extra pieces of hair which don't match the image and there are also no high quality texture sets available for this model.
I have tried to solve the issue of extra hair at the back and sides by altering the transparency map that comes with the model (060_Tr.jpg) to hide the extra hair. Ali has kindly given me permission to share my modification of his transparency map. Let me say immediately that is not perfect, I am not a texture artist, but I hope it brings the Hr-060 model a bit closer to that idealised and simplistic pigtail hair style that Shaaelia and many others are looking for.
... in the following message will be the new transparency map and screen caps of the model....
If any hair modelers are considering making a new pigtail hair figure, I'd be more than happy to put forward a few suggestions.
Cheers,
Isaacnewton

I can't get the hang of posting images... they never seem to go where I want them to go.
