I have a 64 bit pentium dual core CPU, ES 540 - 2.7 ghz. Windows 7
Looking for as much render speed as possible. Under the General Preferences/Render tab, at what do I set the number of threads?
Do I check "separate Process"?
Thanks.

The general recommendation is one thread per core, but if your cpu supports hyperthreading you may gain some speed with more threads.
Separate process will slow you down due to setup time on a 64 bit system.
The best way to test is create a test scene, render once to get everything in memory.
then use render firefly script with render(time) option and play

you could send the render to Queue Manager or render in background, then you could keep on working while it's rendering

Misty, how do I render in background?
MistyLaraCarrara posted Tue, 17 January 2012 at 2:30 PM
Open the Render Setting dialog when you're ready to start.
There is a little drop down list near the bottom of the dialog,
you'll see a few options,
one of them is the Render in Background.

Just so you know, I have my 6 core set to 12 threads and it works. I will try some different settings to see if there is any improvement. But for now, I am not having any problems with it. Is your Windows 7 64bit or 32bit.

Check separate process becomes faster when you are getting low on RAM under an OS that has a RAM limitation.
