These pictures show how here in South Limburg houses and churches were building with marl. There are quarries from which limestone is mined. So these are my contribution this week. Thank you for the challenge, my friends.

Here a churchwindow:

Hi. I'm barely here these days, but when I was told you were doing *architecture*, I thought I gotta try something! (I began in architectural drawing, so it has a very special meaning for me.) Please forgive that I'm not here alot, but I look all the time & love what you've posted here so far.

My 2:

This is a "guilloche" pattern, a common architectural ornament. Tara just posted another sample from the same building (The Harold Washington Public Library in Chicago), only she called it "Ric Rac". Bravo. Ornaments should cross all boundaries...

anahata.c posted Sun, 04 March 2012 at 11:15 AM

This is a house a block from my home. I shot this for its spare wintry nakedness. It's a romanesque arch with rusticated stone. It's a lovely old rock-of-a-mansion, typical of where I live...

RodS posted Sun, 04 March 2012 at 1:39 PM

This is actually the parking garage at the new Kansas City Public Library in downtown Kansas City, Mo.

Looking up at this makes me feel like a Hobbit....

I didn't appreciate the architecture of this former Catholic Seminary built in 1931 until I dug into its architectural style and compared what I read with what I photographed.

This building, now in a Washington State Park, was built 81 years ago in the Romanesque Revival style which became very popular in the USA during the last half of the 19th century and again during the 1920s-30s.

Here's a quick key to recognizing the Romanesque Revival architectural style:

The defining feature of the Romanesque Revival is the semi-circular arch used for all window and door openings and for wall enrichment. Other distinguishing motifs are beltcourses and the arcaded corbel table which is a series of miniature arches below the eaves. Belt- or stringcourses mark horizontal divisions. Column capitals and compound arches are enriched with geometric medieval ornament. Facades have gabled roofs flanked by square or polygonal towers of differing heights, with parapets or various roof shapes, and occasionally spires of Gothic origin. Broad, smooth wall surfaces of monochromatic brick or ashlar masonry laid with thin mortar joints were favored.

"Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes."

auntietk posted Mon, 05 March 2012 at 2:26 AM

Wow ... That building is a classic example of the style you described!  Very cool.

Well, it's snowing.  I really wanted to take NEW pictures for this challenge, since I shoot architecture all the time, but I'm not going out in the snow to take pictures.

But what's a challenge for, unless it's challenging??

So.  I took this picture out my window just now.  It isn't even half an hour old.  On the right-hand side of the picture is our upstairs balcony, and the house with all the rooflines belongs to our neighbor.  The challenge for me was to shoot something I've been looking at since 1994 when I moved in here, and hopefully make it look interesting.

Honestly, it still looks like my neighbor's house.  LOL!  I hope it looks better to you than it does to me!  I can sort of see interest in it, as long as I don't look at it too long.  I do like it for the division of space, the thirds and diagonals.

We're not supposed to have a lot of snow, so I should be able to get out soon and find something more interesting to shoot!

There's something about architecture that's really appealing, and pleasing to me. I guess it's the lines, cures and many different shapes lighting can make.

Impressing lines are to see, in your photo, Tara.

It is also interesting to see the environment in which Bill you live.

This is the Catholic church, which stands in our street, halfway upwards the mountain. As you can see, from 1739. Now a recent photo. Although I am not Catholic, I often saw the interior of this church.

People from throughout our province want to get married in this church, because the location is beautiful, as well as the intimate inside.

An iconic shot, Ronnie ... it's wonderful!  I'd love to see more architectural work from you.  Your area is full of wonderful buildings that I haven't seen yet!  After I'm done in Mies's town, I'll pop over to London and spend the rest of my life shooting there.  :P  Too much to see!!!

So much interest details are to admire on your upload, mbz2662.
Looks like it's recently restored, because the colors look like new, especially against the blue sky.

Indeed, no beauty to the surroundings, Ronoir; but I see what Tara meant, and that makes it fun.
For me anyway it is interesting to see this, as I didn't know London has more high buildings otherwise as the BB. :D

Welcome to The Paramount.  It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Paramount is an excellent example of the art deco motion picture palaces built in the late 1920's and early 30's. The restoration retained the Paramount's opulent, richly embellished interior. The original Venetian-styled murals and the art deco ambience were faithfully recreated. The auditorium holds 756.          I got this info. from the paramountcenter.com. :))) We were in there watching "Chris Thomas King" during The Bristol Rhythm and Roots here in VA in Sept. 2011. :)))))))

This hive probably took 20 or more years to build. The hive was in a HUGE tree that was hollow in the center, it extended for 8-10 vertical feet.

2nd building is the aptly named 'Manchester One', taken while on a shoot a few months back. I think the old building in front was originally a tram or bus shed, but it's now the home to the MOSI aeronutical collection. Lovely place to visit, with a amazingly diverse collection anything from a Japanese kamakazie, loads of 1950's planes, through to a studio model of the NCC1701-D and delivery bicycles. Best of all it's totally free. Literally next door to the Coronation Street TV soap set, though theres no public access to that.

Here's a graceful little bridge which connects the grassy shore with a pavilion over the water. The pavilion is used for congregating, visiting, fishing, and for late evening interludes by lovers.

This particular lake is a crater lake called Seven Star Lakes. Each of the seven lakes has a boulder which split upon entry to the earths atmosphere. The boulder was a part of the comet which struck the earth and set it on its axis, leaving a boiling caldera in the north pole. The rock split into seven pieces and left seven impact craters which soon filled with water. What remained of that comet is now called Planet Mercury.

About 1,200 years ago, locals dug canals between the lakes so as to interconnect them. They reason for calling them Seven Stars Lakes, is naturally, because a star came to earth leaving these rocks and lakes in its wake.

What fun to be able to post two a week!  :)

We took a drive down to Mercer Island one day last week and drove around looking for interesting architecture and fun things to do.   Well ... we found fun things to do!  I wasn't so wild about the architecture.

BUT!  It's a challenge, so here's what I saw.  These are very expensive apartment buildings in a very chi-chi neighborhood of Seattle.  (Mercer Island is in the middle of Lake Washington.)

My first one of this week, is from what here we call 'De Kluis'. (the safe)

I translated a bit information into english, hope it is well.

When I go to the city (by bike) which is the closed to do shopping, it's only about 10 minutes biking from our home.

The building was founded in 1699 by Princess Maria-Dorothea Dietrich von Stein von Salm (1667-1732), Countess of Geleen and Amstenrade. She wanted to be a military hospital (lazerij 'or leper house) to establish infectious patients to leave nursing. One part was a chapel dedicated to St. Lazarus. The building was the foundation is not meant to be safe. This is reflected in the fact that the safe (even then) was not isolated, but at a crossroads, which in those days was the designated location for an inn. Also misses the vault until the day the usual garden. Still got all the suspected military hospital during the life of the contract giver this special purpose. Thus, the safe in Schaelsberg in 1688 was commissioned by Count Gerard of Cartiels Hoen, the then lord of Castle Schaloen, reportedly in gratitude that he had escaped drowning. The Countess of Geleen may also have followed this example, probably a similar reason.

It has also a relation with that castle Schaloen, from wich I posted several photo's on my gallery.

What a great shot!  You've got me wondering about those little towers.  It looks like there are staircases inside, because of the windows, but why on earth would anyone build a tower with a staircase that doesn't go anywhere but up to the top?  You see, this is one of the reasons I like architecture so much.  These questions are so intriguing!  Great capture, my friend.  What a cool place!

dochtersions posted Fri, 30 March 2012 at 10:13 AM

Thank you so much, Christo and Tara.

b.t.w.:

Laughing, Tara! I have no idea whether there are stairs, but it should be.
In this place I took many pictures of old churches and monasteries.
All are restored at this time.
Because of these workmen I was limited in making specific photos, and I could not (or rather, didn't dare) to go inside.
Everywhere there were cars and machines/intruments of the workmen, much dust I got over me ;-).
But, you have something 'sacrifice' to take pictures, right?

There is an abundance of churches, etc. in Sittard.
One of the restorers told me that (about 25 years ago) the pope visited them.
They let ring all the bells in all towers on the same time, as the Pope arrived. However, there was panic, because one of the highest church towers (which included a clock) began to move back and forth.
They had to be quickly stopped.

God bless, and greetz,
Mies/Jacomina :)

Is it not amazing how many churches and hospitals feature for our focus on architecture?

I was in Franschhoek for breakfast today and walked around afterwards.  The 1841 NG Kerk in the town caught my attention - plus it was open for us to go inside.

Nowhere as statuesque as the church in Sittard, Mies!
