I remember not long ago LaurieA asking around about rendering glass.
Today, I downloaded Blender 2.63. I did this tutorial on Cycles, which included making the items in the image and making the materials for them.
Set up this "room", set up some lights and a camera and rendered. All of this took roughly an hour and a half, because I'm slow. And pedantic. The render was set to only 500 samples, so it is a bit grainy and there's a bit of fireflies artifact (like Lux):
The image is under-exposed - this is my first-ever play with Blender where a render came out looking half-way decent, so colour me thrilled - and there's a few other things not right with it, but for an hour-and-a-half's work, I'm quite excited. Particularly the glass has got me impressed. So, I'm looking at my beloved Poser and wondering. What would it take...
