Hi Carin.

Great start with that cute dog - looks like he comes out of the monitor and jump on me.

A great idea - a challenge where I get some images to fit in :)

The first image I like to post shows an Elephant Hawk Moth sitting on my finger.

Thanks for the great work of the staff-crew here.

dochtersions posted Fri, 04 May 2012 at 2:33 AM

Such a lovely dog and photo, Carin. His hair is swinging all around his body, such funny and happy, my friend.

Praeb this is an amazing 'frontshot', the attitude is great; I love to know it's balacing on your finger (great POV too).

Have a lovely day, all.

Meisiekind posted Fri, 04 May 2012 at 3:16 AM

Praep - what a killer image of the moth. A real beauty and the detail is just marvelous! More please!!!! :)

Thanks Clive, Praep, Christo & Jacomina... JD is a joy!

Taken two hours ago on the way to Malmesbury in the Western Cape, South Africa.

This is a Burchell's zebra (Equus quagga burchellii).  He and about 5 friends also wearing striped pajamas live on a chicken farm, no doubt kept as lawn-mowers to manage the vegitation!

Clive

cfulton posted Fri, 04 May 2012 at 9:30 AM

In the background of the zebra above you can see some Springbok (Afrikaans and Dutch: spring = jump; bok = antelope or goat) (Antidorcas marsupialis).  The herd is about 20 strong and the also help the zebras with the gardening.

They were all quite skittish, not minding the traffic of the N7 National Route, but very weary when I stopped the car and walked closer to the fence.

Clive

Meisiekind posted Fri, 04 May 2012 at 10:42 AM

Oh wow - well spotted Clive and well done for taking the images for the challenge!

Zebras are such amazing subjects to photograph... They make wonderful portraits... and apparently lawnmovers... Tee hee....

Oh, we are in wildlife heaven out here on the Olympic Peninsula!  I saw a bald eagle today, and we have seen two herds of Roosevelt Elk.  There are several nearby farms that have cows in the pastures.  A bird tried to steal my sandwich yesterday.  Cheeky little feathered thief!  A sandpiper entertained us this morning on the beach, there is a crow perched in the tree next to our campsite, and earlier today I saw a man with a camera taking a picture of a gull on a piling.  (The man was not Bill ... just some stranger with a camera.)  Did I take any pictures of ANY of these creatures?  I did not.  I enjoyed every minute of all those sightings, but never once did I raise my camera.

Well, now that I've come to the Forum and found out what the monthly challenge is, hopefully I'll be able to get a picture of an animal!  I warn you ... I'm not very good at this ... but I'll try!  That's why it's a challenge!  :)

I suppose I can always share a picture of Mandy turning her back to the camera ... it's what she does best!  LOL!

Wonderful images, everybody!  I'm totally impressed!  :)

Hi Tara, I'm looking forward (not 'on the back'), hoping you will share your wildlife heaven with us.
In the mean time, just enjoy your camping, it sounds wonderful!

So today you have 'hamsters' on your menu list, Helle?
(eeeh, photo-menu, I mean !)
I can see it for my eyes:
you running behind the hamsters with your camera, trying to catch one.
Good luck, my friend :D

Have a wonderful Sunday, all,
sending love, Mies/Jacomina ;-)

Hi there.

Great captures here. I like the Zebra the most I think.

Here are two shots I managed in the local zoo in Leipzig.

Have fun, I will wait for more shots to come.

Those guys are some kind of lizards or agamids. The shot was taken through a window in the Reptilia-house.

helanker posted Mon, 07 May 2012 at 8:57 AM

Praep, these lizards are so gorgeous. Never seen such lizards before. Lovely shot :-)

helanker posted Mon, 07 May 2012 at 9:01 AM

Yes, Jacomina and here is a tiny hamster only a few weeks old. Unfortunately I had troubles getting good shots of it Because i was too greedy. Wanted to have a really close portrait and forgot my camera takes BIG pictures, so I didnt need to go close..., but this is one of the few decent shots i have left. The rest are deleted. These little creatures are fast. GEES!

Really great fun to look at the cute hamster.

Here is one more from the zoo - a little Squirrel monkey is looking right to me.

They ran free in the zoo and the staff said "Don't reach over the ropes and don't eat when they are near you! They can bite!!!" - I tried to take some shots and they like it and don't try to bite me. Happy photographer I was :)

She is doing ballet called RAD as she did BBO before. It seems that RAD is more accaptable then BBO Internationally. Any way these 2 captures comes at a cost. A security guard stoopd next to me while i walked around in Lombard str in Wonderboom telling me that the people is complaining of a persin walking with a camera taking pictures which i did of a beautiful post box and several dogs and rays and clouds. I told the fellow that i will bewalking to my vehicle and that i would not walk around again in that area. So my friends 2 uploads of animals. all of them dogs guarding thier houses and owners.

Preap it is the second incident I have expertienced. Before i was accused of spying when i stopped nect to a aloe tree which was in flower taking pictures of birds enjoyinmg the juices of the aloe flower. An estate agent even stopped in front of me talleng me that they have my number plate and that the people are feeling uncomfortable with me taking pictures in the area that they reside. Anyway that wont stop me enjoying my hobbhy and talent i am using to take pictures. God Bless.

I was so curious what they will look like.

Ronoir, Jazz is GREAT! :D. I love the POV, it's so funny too.

Alhak, this is a lot of fun, you together with your big boss on adventure, and the macro-shot also looks great.

Hi Christo, not yet been arrested?

Jacomani just staying out of jail. Feels like i am playing monopoly and just passing jail every time. Lol the Police even drove in once at our lapa gate as i was lying on my stomach taking pictures of Dragon Flies. At leat those police officers apologized when thye saw that i had a camera with me and even asked what i was photographing. Meisiekind a very state that our people are living at the moment. I believe it is because of crime that every one has such a feel of panic. I can say that the people patrolling that area is on the ball as they responded so quickly noticing me walking around with my camera, but then again they making me feel like a criminal.I do ask myself then am i free to walk in the streets with such things happening when i have my camera with me. Lol at least I got some descent shots for this challenge and it is forwards march searching for more without losing an arm or a leg. Seems that the e-bots also dissapeared for this challenge. Even though my participation here is sporadic due to travel, I've been thinking about you all and about the challenge!  We're at a nice campground right now that has an excellent internet connection, as well as ANIMALS!   So when I saw critters here, I remembered to take pictures.  :P  They're wild ... this isn't a farm or anything ... but there's a beautiful, big field right across from our campsite, and it attracts all manner of wild creatures.

There was a guy at the dock in Tokeland the other day who was dumping the bait from his crab pots at the end of the day.  The gulls were hovering, waiting for him to throw the dead fish into the water.  It was a perfect opportunity to try some "bird on the wing" shots!

After I got those shots of the gulls, I thought, "well, I won't see any more interesting animals for a while."  Yesterday I took pictures of two ... CAMELS!!!!!    Yes, camels in Washington State.  LOL!  Even if the shots came out blurry and terrible, I will still share them.  But not until next week!

For both this capture i opened the window in the control room and aimed at one of our Pylons inside the station grounds and aiming onto the water of our dam getting these results. On the Pylon a flock of Sacred Ibis was getting ready to sleep for the night and on the water i beleive a Egyptian Goose is enjoying the water.

Hi friends,

For this week, here's something from me.
We saw this deer in the afternoon, not far from our house.
It is rare that you meet here a deer. There are probably ( I guess) 5 copies around here.
But it's not often that they show themselves, so we where very exciting by seeing it.

Love its spotted fur :D  Beautifully captured, Jacomina :)  Have you thought about, it might be THEM who are messing up your garden? You need to set up a WEBcam in your garden.. :)

Well, not so cute as a deer...this watersnake was sunning beside a pond and seen this weekend.  The boldy is perhaps 1.5 inches thick in the middle section. These are not venemous but if unable to slip away will bite and may leave a mark on the skin. The law makes it illegal to harm or keep alive or any part of wild animals which are not legally hunted, including this snake. Kill it and face $1000 fine where we saw this one.

helanker posted Tue, 22 May 2012 at 1:18 PM

That is indeed a beauty.  Excellent shot, Tom.

We have a grass snake hiding on the stone fence :-) Have seen it severel times, but unfortunately never when I have a camera in my hands :-(  I will try to spot it. :)

dochtersions posted Tue, 22 May 2012 at 1:35 PM

What a fantastic animal you've captured here, Tom.
I love this shot, as the two textures are such great together.
BTW, thank you for the interesting info, Tom.

Thank you, dear Helle.
And indeed, that is something to think about, it could indeed be deer, which made that mess in our garden! You know all about this, huh ;-)

helanker posted Tue, 22 May 2012 at 1:44 PM

You bet I do...lol... and I just planted two geraniums today and I am almost certain they are eaten tomorrow. Once last year I came out a morning and ALL of my 8 geraniums were without flowers. Eaten ! That was the thanks for all the winter having feeding them...lol! Ungrateful little robbers. :)

TomDart posted Tue, 22 May 2012 at 1:56 PM

Deer... we live just inside a wood line wth a small woods behind the house. Deer will eat our yard plants and love the fresh shoots.  My mother-in-law lives in a small city with houses all around and deer still find her flower garden and vegetables.

I was told of many ways to keep the deer away from plants and one which was effective is this: String a "fence" of old video tape around the garden, tape about 1/2m to 1m above the ground.  The tape shimmers in the air and may make a sound the deer hear.  This is not attractive but is not ugly.  Last year the tape stopped the eating of hostas at the wood edge.  This year, I will use if needed until the plants are fully grown.  Thus far, the plants have not been nibbled.   Squirrels will sometimes dig up the bulbs of tulips and other bulb plants.

Jacomina, the deer may believe you planted the garden for them!  Yummmmm!

helanker posted Tue, 22 May 2012 at 2:11 PM

WOW! I must try that trick out here. THank you,  I soon cannot have any flowers unless they are in a hight that they cannot reach, so we have a balustrade on the front of the house, where we place our pots, but the pot I planted two geraniums in, is down    I take the chance .... maybe they dont like them this year... they change alot.

What a beautiful way to end your post for this month. These lovely animals are very well captured, Christo

helanker posted Mon, 28 May 2012 at 2:03 AM

This is maybe not as charming as the lovely African animals, but still I find them very interesting :D

dochtersions posted Mon, 28 May 2012 at 8:34 AM

A horse is a horse ! And your captures are amazing beautiful, Clive.

A superb lovely cat yo have bakabo!

I got no ebots, that's why I'm late ;-)

dochtersions posted Mon, 28 May 2012 at 8:39 AM

Oh well, and now I see your beautiful animals, Christo. What is nature great!

Huh....., what is this, my dear friend Helle, are this Denmark-spiders?
Are you sure, this are animals, or did you upload them to late, and is this belonging to the 'food-challange' :D

LOL!

helanker posted Mon, 28 May 2012 at 8:55 AM

I dont know how hungry I had to be for eating such stuff as spiderbabies, but I bet it would be delicious for a lizard

Last I saw a program about  ' cooking with insects ', perhaps this inspired my question, Helle.
btw, your shot is so good, you can't count how many animals you put in, by doing one upload, isn't that great?

A fly on (wet) Forget-me-not, of course spotted in our garden.

helanker posted Mon, 28 May 2012 at 9:54 AM

I almost got this about 2 cm long larva  into my face. It isnt the best quality, but I found it fun that it was hanging from our lovely Hawthorn, which is I  bloom now :)

dochtersions posted Mon, 28 May 2012 at 9:55 AM

Thank you for the compliments :)

Yes, I wait and see, and just in the moment I read your posting, I remember I have a stunning shot of a grub larva;
but maybe you have this, I hope you have, because for me it's the limit :D

dochtersions posted Mon, 28 May 2012 at 9:56 AM

Ykes, what a stunning green one, Helle, and now I like the pose so much, as I can see it hanging before your face.

Clives Horse-Portraits and Christos Wildlife-Shots are great and I love baby-spiders in her pre-schools :)

The fly, butterfly and the caterpillar are my favourites like you know when you visit my gallery here.

I was in a garden this weekend where great artists show small versions of buildings from all over the world (Miniwelt Lichtenstein - http://www.miniwelt.de/). There where a castle where the windows are without glas and as I look closer I found the babies you see on the shot. A safe place for the knights in the middleages, a safe place for birds today. On the left and the right side you see parts of the window-frames.

And here the second shot of this weekend and my last in this challenge because of the restrictions in max. 2 per week and member *sigh* - a small salamnader (maybe Common Newt) I also found in the Exhibition of the small buildings. There where a small pond and he sat on the ground. The shadow you see is my hand trying to hold the sun back while trying to get a shot of him.

Hi praeb, what a fantastic birds-nest, to admire. I love this, it's so 'süss', und cute!
Thank you also for the link. Ich dachte Lichtenstein ist ein Land, aber wie ich sehe liegt es im Süd-Ost Deutschland. (I thought it was a land, but now I see it is also a town in Germany.)

I like the Salamander too. :)

Have a wonderful week everybody!

Honey reminds me of Andrea's Rosie!  :)  They're both cutie-pies.  Great shots!
