I recently purchased content that has materials in mt5 files. I get a "bad file" message when I try to use them. This is the second time( different product) this has happened, I can't use the content. I have Poser8 on a Mac. The files have been installed according to the "read me" instructions. I have contacted the content creator, it does not appear she has the answer as to why my computer can't read the files. Smith Micro says there shouldn't be a problem reading mt5s on my computer, and I should go back to the creator of the content. Has anybody had this problem?

Is the error message a MAC error message or a poser error, and what is the exact message?

Did you try to open them inside of Poser in the material room?

It is a poser message: can't load texture.bad file.
jimefbe posted Mon, 14 May 2012 at 1:33 PM
yes, I tried it in the material room. textures that are jps, psds, or other image files always work, but mt5s don't.
willyb53 posted Mon, 14 May 2012 at 1:37 PM
how did you try to apply it, from the library or select from the browse button

MT5's are not textures. They are shaders which can reference textures, but they are not the actual textures. If it says "can't load texture.bad file." I am surprised, since professional programmers are not allowed to spell that way. Could you tell us exactly what it says? Assuming it's close to that, the simplest explanation is - you have a bad texture file, i.e. a corrupt JPEG or something. We'd have to know what is in the shader - what file is it asking for - to be sure.

Just to clarity, you are clicking on the mt5 icon in the material room for a particular object or model? Is the mt5 specific for a particular model (although this shouldn't have any bearing.)?

You are trying to select a material as if it was a picture. You're going about it all wrong.
You double click the mt5 file in the library window and it will fill in the whole material - it's not a picture.

you can open the mt5 in any text editor to see what it is referring to.
If you can not find a bad image file perhaps you can post a screencap of the mt5 file so we can see how the file is being referenced.
Ideally all file paths will be relative paths and use : as the seperator like
":runtime:libraries:materials:mymats:thismatfile.mt5"

I tried double clicking the icon in the library window first, and that didn't work. So then I tried the material room as the ReadMe instructed. I just tried it again it still does not work, I have installed it 3 times trying different folders

For an MT5 file, to apply in the pose window in P8, you have to drag and drop, you can not double click.
from the material room, you select object, open library and double click icon.
An mt5 file can not be applied with the browse button

We do need to be in the advanced settings of the material room to see if the shaders loaded properly, if at all.
willyb53 posted Mon, 14 May 2012 at 2:09 PM
Open the library while in the material room. apply from there.
I am not sure on MAC, but ctru-shift B on windows will open it.
you CAN NOT navigate to an mt5 file and apply the way you are trying.
It must be appled from the library.

I just tried what Bill said, it works. Thanks, I learned something.I have been using Poser once in a while for less than a year. I found it somewhat complicated, I have not used any type of 3D software before.
Thanks again guys!
