How do you create primitives in Poser 7 like you would do for programs such as ZBrush and Maya?
mitzi-CG posted Thu, 24 May 2012 at 8:50 AM
All versions of Poser have a folder called "Primitives" under Props.
Just pick out the one you want to use

Yeah but those are basic primitives. I'm talking about the more high detailed ones that Maya has. Maya has more primitives than Poser does. I was aware of those primitives but I'm talking about creating things like a cylinder block, etc. I mean I do have Maya, just not on my machine. Trying to percerive memory usage so I wanted to know if its possible to just custom make primitives from scratch and if so what sort of tools would anyone recommend using for it. Sorry if I wasn't clearer about that the first time.

But to answer the OP's actual question, you can't without a lot of fiddling around. Poser isn't made for creating models of any kind. You'd be better off using ZBrush, Maya, Max, Blender, Wings, etc for that kind of thing.
The fiddling around method involves using Poser's grouping tool, exporting bits of existing models and reimporting them. Poser does not have any built in modelling capabilities.

....Then what the hell is Poser used for????? I mean I already know that its animation tools aren't that good. But I've seen some people do good with it, not as good as Maya but still a little better than what I could possibly do in terms of animating...Poser sounds quite disappointing when you said that. I mean I use it mostly for rendering and such. But I know that some people will just go into photoshop or some other program and then they'll just pretty much do all the harder work that can't be done in Poser. But it makes me curious as to what people use to design and create the figures and props used in Poser including Daz?
shuy posted Thu, 24 May 2012 at 9:06 AM
For this purpose Wings would be the best. You do not need software with advanced options.
Wings is free, is small (I do not remember but about 10-20MB) and what is most important Wings is very easy.
BTW - Sam I think that you can model something in Poser. I never tried, but I think that you can weld one sided square. It would be difficult and useless but I think possible.

Poser is a toy.

Well, not Poser because it's not a 3D modelling app. Modelling would typically be done in the programs you mentioned, imported into Poser and (if required) rigged.
There's no point moaning about Poser's lack of features compared to (say) Maya, because one costs a couple of hundred dollars and the other a couple of thousand.
Why not try Blender or Wings3D? They're both free.

It's used to pose and render figures. What did ya think? And if you have Maya, what do ya want with it anyway? Aren't you supposed to be makin your own figures or something?

They're a bit more expensive, but have you tried using a nail gun PhilC?
...if that doesn't work, then screw it.

@EnglishBob: Those primitives look great, however you will need to search the site to find the Poser compatible content. Those in the link are exclusive to Bryce and cannot be imported into Poser as is without converting them first.
monkeycloud posted Thu, 24 May 2012 at 10:01 AM
In terms of modelling, Hexagon is also still free at present. Personally I've found it quite useable, on OS X.
So regardless of which one you end up using, assuming you don't have access to Maya at all times, on all computers(?), its probably worth snapping that up too...?

And those of us with Poser 8 and above will have checked out Dimension3D's primitives (which ship with the program, in Props > Primitives > Morphing Primitives in P9 and PP2012) - quite a few of which will morph - haven't we?
Incredibly useful, they can be.

A couple years ago, in Poser 5, I built a no-frills octagon arena (no roof so I could shoot from above), stands for holding spotlights, spotlights (with "real" lights set inside so the prop worked like a light), and what sorta kinda looked like a movie camera for a behind-the-scenes shot of a catfight video. No idea where I named or put the final scene, but I am sure I saved it on the old computer somewhere.
No idea how I would make something new, but it is fairly easy to modify the primitives in the Props library to end up with something else.

If you want to create geometry using only Poser, then you need to use Python.
For non-programmers, using a modelling app is generally easier.

I tried building a house with Poser. They are much lighter than bricks, but very much more expensive.

"Virtually" impractical. :D
Probably better looking than some in my neighborhood, though.

it's possible to do alot of modelling in poser, if morphing(waves/magnets/et al.) qualify as modelling, and cage even wrote a UVmapping script for poser IIRC. the poser group editor has some functions that are similar to modelling.
lmckenzie posted Thu, 24 May 2012 at 6:32 PM
So install Maya and make some primitives. IIRC from your previous posts, d___ing with Poser seems to be holding you back from learning what would seem to be a more powerful and certainly lucrative application. You're always going to be disappointed in Poser comparing the two. If you haven't figured out "....what the hell is Poser used for?????" by now, give it up.

Well, my first answer still stands. You can't model in Poser without a lot of fiddling around. Better to use a proper modelling app.
For example, I can do some great, really intricate drawings on an Etch A Sketch but why on earth would I want to? There are far better tools for the job.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

primitives are primitives... ie: cube, sphere, cylinder, torus, plane.
what else do you need? a teapot? a Bryce dolphin? :D
if you want more complex objects they are no longer 'primitives'. but there is nothing stopping you from importing whatever free 3D meshes you want into your Poser/Props/Primitives folder and then using them.
BB: nice job with the primitives, you have way more patience than i do :)
