Subject: is this a focal length problem?

I have a ballroom that looks spacious in poser, but when I bring it into vue it looks small, even if I enlarge the room to 10x its normal size.  If I lower the focal length of the camera to 35 the room looks better but I maybe get some distortion I think similar to when the focal length of the poser camera is that low, and yet in poser the room looks fine.

I find this problem with all poser rooms that I use in vue.

Any ideas?

I think the default Poser camera's focal lengh is 55mm, wheras in Vue it's 35. So yes, it must be a focal lengh issue regarding distortion.

You say it looks bigger in Poser, do you mean you see more of the room? Because it would not make sense. A 55mm camera would show less, but without distortion.

you are right. I was comparing a scene where the focal length in poser was 24 compared with 45 in vue.  however when one reduces focal length in vue one seems to get more distortion - or am I wrong.

You get more fisheye when you decrease the Focal in Vue.  Is that all you changed?  I have 100m for Focus.  My FOV is 54.4 degrees.  All defaults.

The Poser room should look just fine in Vue with either 35mm or 50mm once it is scaled to real size.  Same with the Poser figures.  My Poser 6 figures (V3, M3, and Posette) come in at around 1.9m tall.

The smaller the focal lengh, the more distortion you get indeed, that's a law of physics that virtual cameras take into account.

But maybe the virtual poser camera looks better?

I'm testing Poser and Vue an dthe Stinemason Courtyard, and I don't see much difference between cameras... There is not more distortion in Vue. Maybe the envirnment you are using is bigger.

U r probably right. It is probably just the way I had my camera placed.

do you generally upscale the poser models when you import them or not?  If you do, by how much do you enlarge them and why?

I didn't upscale the model, I just opened it then saved it in P7, and imported it in Vue.

My internal Vue units are set to 1 unit = 1 meter. If yours is 1 unit =10cm, maybe then, the model needs to be upscaled 10x

Strange that different users have different default focal lenghts.

Mine is 35mm and I supposed this was the general default.

Try to set it at 17mm and you will get the same perspective distortion as with a camera lens... without barrel distortion, chromatic aberration or the awful lack of sharpness you get in real life!

Vue's default is 35mm indeed. If you set it to 17mm, there is distortion, but it is not always too visible, like in my test with the Stonemason Courtytard.

Is Lens aberration set to zero? This is a Vue only feature; and the main difference between Poser camera and Vue Camera. Lens aberration can cause strong effects.

Right click the Camera and select 'Edit Object'. There you find Lens aberration.
