Hi,
I've just been playing with one of David Brinnen's skies, with stars in it. But the stars appear between us and the moon (got a nice big moon), so I wanted to turn the stars off temporarily so I could attempt a render with no stars in front of the moon - so I could then meld the two renders together in ... PhotoShop or something.
But I just can't seem to turn the stars off, I'm in the sky lab, and I click on Stars to turn off that control - no difference, I've tried turning off Celestial too, no difference.
I've tried changing custom field in Celestial to random field - still no difference, well less stars but still stars in front of the moon.
So now I've managed to ruin David's nice starfield, but not to turn the stars off, temporarily or otherwise....
Help?

I know one thing that will do that.
But the lighting will change a lot.
I suppose ity's real dark image, meaning the moon symbol is on?
Change that to sun and that should do it.
Then change the colors to dark.
Works for me.
Hope this works for you, too.

Well as you say - this won't work because it will replace the moon with the sun. And the moon is what I want - moon without stars.

I was afraid of that, yes.
But you can add a moon (sphere), right?
Or use the sun as a moon?
Sorry, girl, this is just about all I know how to get it done. :-(

Yeah, and I've done it that way before, but I wanted to try it this way - with the Bryce moon. (because I intended to go on and test out some moon textures I got from Clay a while ago.)
This is the kind of thing that if only Bryce was properly supported should have been fix in version 6, never mind 7 - I mean ensuring that stars only appeared behind the Bryce moon, not in front of it.
Now there must be some way to turn off the starfield, because not all skies have stars in Bryce... so here's hoping someone will come along and tell us how to do it.

Yeah, I mean here's the same scene rendered with using a massive sphere:
...but I wanted to do it with the Bryce moon, as it's a part of Bryce, I like the idea of being able to use it... sigh.

I understand.
Still, looks good, Fran.
Maybe disableing giving shadows for the sphere would give a better effect?

Er... kiwi_gg,
This is a David Brinnen Sky I'm using. So in that sense, yes it's a Bryce preset.
Peedy/Corrie, not sure what you mean by 'disableing giving shadows for the sphere'
do you mean self shadows? cast shadows, or what?
anyway here it is with all the shadows off for the sphere:
It's exactly the same.

hmm - there was a Mac bug (now fixed) like this where you had to move the Celestial dome "Sun" (in the sky lab) away from the 12 oclock position before you could make any chnages to the starfield. Long shot I know but maybe?
FranOnTheEdge posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:10 AM
Dan, I'll take a look at that...
Nope, tried that - stars are still there.

kiwi_gg,
No problem, I did hesitate as to whether it's a preset or not - thinking of the basic ones that come with Bryce when you first download it - because I think it's one of a package he's given away somewhere, I think he's got some freebies on Horo's website - it might have been one of those.
But original or not it's definitely a.bsk file. But I've mangled it so much trying to remove the stars that it's a moot question by now.

Fran, can you fire me the star file you originally downloaded and used? I'll have a look see and see what is going on, I myself have not had an issue of this nature. claymh@cableone.net

Do you want the file I've been messing with, or the file with the unmessed-about-with Brinnen sky?
Either one looks like this when rendered, crappy: (see above) (and I do mean exactly the same, nothing I have tried has made the slightest difference to the stars)

Quick explanation on this, Bryce has an infinite dome around it, the clouds, the stars the sun etc, so to get some depth other than using a Vol slab, you can "fake it" using the cloud settings. Saves render times.

Flippin' 'eck! That simple! *smacks head.
Thanks Clay, I'd never have thought of even looking at the clouds - well... I didn't. duh!
Now, I just need to remember where I put those moon images you sent me, a long long time ago, if there are still around on this PC. Trouble is I think I lost some stuff in the recent melt-down, and I can't yet find them....

Hey Clay, does having stars originating from clouds mean you can animate them?

Should be able to if its the cloud setting itself like in David's sky.
