Before I step on any toes, I'd like to know if there are any protocols or social norms relating to listing an artist as my friend on my page.

Hi Vince,
There is no protocol, just send a friend request. If for some reason you question if they might not be interested then send them a site mail first! :)
If they decline your request, or do not come on line often, then I would say wait until they respond to your site mail. Almost everyone here is very nice. So i would think your friend request will be accepted... ;)
