I just got a notice that Shade was free today only. Have any of you folks used it and if so, how does it stack up against the other free modelling options in regard to ease of use/learning curve/etc?
foxylady1 posted Wed, 04 July 2012 at 9:40 AM
Do you have a link basicwiz?
I used Shade at version 7 and thought it was great. I lost track of it over the years, but would love to give it a try again.
I had a lot of models and used to try and replicate them for a learning experience. A lot of that knowledge I had probably isn't any good anymore.
SamTherapy posted Wed, 04 July 2012 at 9:48 AM
I know a lot of the Japanese content makers have used Shade in the past but I don't anything about it.
A link would be great, since I'd like to try it alongside the other apps I have.

Oh, and I got Shade 7 free with a Poser purchase (can't remember which one - 6 or 7). I used it to make a few things. Not too hard to figure out ;).

Whoops, x-posted... Thanks LaurieA

I have shade Basic... I like it, just needs more of the features in Shade Standard and Professional editions
I switched to Hexagon when that became free. But I'd switch back to Shade I reckon, if I could get my grubby hands on Shade Standard, without parting with any more of the money I don't have anymore, due to spending it all already, largely on other CG software
Unfortunately I'm getting a processing error trying to proceed past putting Shade Standard in my cart... I've messaged the website support.
Is anyone else managing to download it?
Cheers
foxylady1 posted Wed, 04 July 2012 at 10:08 AM
I put it in my cart and checked out. You have to wait for the email with the link. It takes about a day to receive the link though.
Do you have an account there? If so, just log in and you can put it in your cart. There is no direct download.
jartz posted Wed, 04 July 2012 at 10:08 AM
When I ordered, it stated as "queued". So I reckon I have to wait.

That would be more a job for something like 3d-coat or Zbrush. Sure, you can save the zbuffer, and I've done some displacement maps myself (for roof tiles and similar things).
No decimation algorithm inside Shade.

seemed unstable in the beginning, but that could have been me.
It has all the rings and bells including a decend displacement and soften tool. Plus soft selection and symmetry that I use a lot.

I still prefer using the copy of Shade 12 Basic I bought from the mac app store back last year.
There's a lot of improvements to the general UI in version 12, over 10, I'd say... and to some of the basic tools.
But at least the version 10 Standard I got on the free download day has it's UV mapping functionality enabled.
All of the UV mapping functionality seems to be disabled in the basic version of Shade 12...
So... I'm still doing most of the modelling I've been attempting to do in Shade 12 Basic and Hexagon... and tbh, will probably just continue to UV map in Hexagon... or ZBrush
