dochtersions posted Wed, 01 August 2012 at 12:16 PM

Thank you dear Carin!

I guess that clashing colors are the same as bright contrasting colors.

This I conclude because of the beautiful examples,
as the translation into Dutch does something strange.

:)

auntietk posted Wed, 01 August 2012 at 2:19 PM

@ Jacomina ... yes, it also means "Complimentary" colors, which is sort of backwards, but means the same as contrasting.  Things that are opposite on the color wheel.  Red and green, purple and yellow, blue and orange ... they're all wonderful combinations!

I'm looking forward to this.  It should be a great challenge!

This photo is only a few hours old...emphasis on a FEW...it was taken as I was walking home from work.  I don't know the name of this place, but it's lighting scheme is always a bit gaudy.  This is the first night I saw the fire.

auntietk posted Thu, 02 August 2012 at 2:16 AM

Bill brought me a bowl of blueberries in one of our bright yellow bowls, and I couldn't resist the challenge ... this was taken with my iPhone on auto-flash!  Yikes!  Well, you use what you have.  :P

I don't know if anyone's interested in this, but I thought I'd give a little background.

Tara, you may have used the common mis-spelling of "complimentary" quite unintentionally; but let me correct it here.

The actual word is "compl-E-mentary" (with an "e"), meaning "to complete". In color theory, those opposite colors "complete" each other. When combined, they produce either pure white or pure black. (Sometimes gray.) I won't get into reasons, but we naturally resonate with these opposites because they feel like opposites. And when put next to each other---as the wonderful photos above show---they create immense contrasts.

The Impressionists (Monet) put complementary colors next to each other to create luminosity. The Post Impressionists (van Gogh) put them together to create an almost sweltering look. "Clashing" is often used in place of "complementary". They create explosive contrasts.

I give a link below---van Gogh---to show reds against greens. It's an intense hangover of a scene, one of his most famous interiors. That's the power of clashing colors...

The photographs above are all marvelous! Just wanted to give a little background...

be well, all, mark

anahata.c posted Thu, 02 August 2012 at 6:48 PM

ps---when I said a "common misspelling" I meant that a lot of books and articles call it 'complimentary', not that you can't spell, Tara. Hope that was clear! (It's a common mistake). m

auntietk posted Thu, 02 August 2012 at 11:30 PM

Thanks for the correction!  I didn't take it personally ... not to worry!  :)  My self worth is not tied to my ability to spell.  The information is interesting, and makes SOoooo much more sense!

anahata.c posted Fri, 03 August 2012 at 6:07 AM

Tara - Your usual bold, beautiful portraits. The portrait (from a series many of your fans love) has beautiful saturated hues, with wonderfully clashing reds/greens, oranges/blues, etc. And real joy too...

The blueberries have deep blues and orange-yellows (in painting that would be a wonderful 'cadmium yellow'). Fine minimalism and off-center composition.

Costa - I've seen shots like these in your gallery, and they're visual dances. The artist(s) wanted to make their colors bounce off each other, and that's what they do in your shot. And it's great to see the lines in the wall, etc. Brings us back to what it really is...

Chip - another of your spirit-inside-the-building shots, with real complementary contrasts and a luminosity that only you get. I've lived in this city for years, and I still think you travel to ancient Mesopotamia to get your shots. The blues and oranges are lucious.

Ok, mine (below) aren't as dramatic: Just yellows/purples, and blues/oranges. Blended by nature...but the clash gives them a 'jump', I think. Hope you like 'm...

@Helle, what pepping up colors your flowers have.

Hello everyone. This theme will be very difficult for me to deal with. My photographs are suffering from chronic monochromatic tone.

Tara you are great, I do not know where you found your models but they are perfectly in tune. The blueberry embody the challenge this month, I think.

Hello Costapanos, wonderful mural.

Chipka Hello, very good night capture.

Hello Anahata, your explanation in English for me is a little complicated in the coming days I will try to study it. About your shots: images clear and fascinating.

Hello Carin, your photos have a decisive cut and expressive. Very beautiful.

Hello Helle, your flowers are clean and elegant, as usual.

Hello Jacomina, very funny and incisive, great contrast.

Hi Mies,

I looked this one up and found this on Wikipededia:

Chamelaucium uncinatum

Geraldton wax is a flowering plant endemic to Western Australia. It is an erect shrub 0.5 to 4m high, bearing white or pink flowers June-November.

I hope this helps a bit!

Clive

dochtersions posted Sat, 18 August 2012 at 4:19 PM

Hi Clive,

Thank you so much for the info.

I will look for it tomorrow. The name is a great help (you are actually).

:), here it's bed-time now.

What a lovely capture of the neirhbor garden, Jacomina. And such a cute little baby too with lovely colored toy.  What you saw were little cucumbers of a special kind. :)

CLive, I like your Wax flowers alot. Beautiful shot :)

Hi Friends,

@ Clive
First this: I didn't see your red helmet super-photo, Clive.
A great catch here!
And I looked for that flowers, men what a lot of species I've seen!

@ Helle....cucumbers!!!???, I never guessed that!
Maybe they taste like that, but one can't see this.
These fruits do not deserve that name. LOL. Baby-cucumbers.

Your looking-through leaf is marvelous, Helle!

helanker posted Sun, 19 August 2012 at 1:26 PM

Thank you very much, Jacomina :-) Yes the tiny cucumbers ere quite odd :-)

auntietk posted Sun, 19 August 2012 at 4:34 PM

Wow ... that's really cool, Jacomina!  A great shot no matter the colors, and the clash is perfect!

Hello Christo, thank you. Hello Carin, thanks Hello Helle, thanks and congratulations to the X-ray leaf  (LOL) Hello Clive, the first is a beautiful image. perfectly framed. The other shows perfectly the emphasis of diversity. Hello Jacomina, adorable your hydrangeas. I do not know if the child is frightened by the camera or playing multicolored. Great catch. But I prefer strawberries also because you can eat (LOL).

Here is another proof colored.

helanker posted Mon, 20 August 2012 at 6:25 AM

auntietk posted Mon, 20 August 2012 at 12:39 PM

A unique take on the subject, Arturo!  The green and orange of the fireworks is just right.  Well done!  :)

helanker posted Tue, 21 August 2012 at 2:03 AM

Thanks guys. My stomach is NOT happy about such sweets either. Sometimes I cant resist anyway and must pay for it. Dennis my youngest son is on vacation for two weeks again.   He eats anything that is organic

...Is he a goat then?

dochtersions posted Tue, 21 August 2012 at 8:35 AM

Hi girlfriend Helle,

To answer your question about your Dennis :

If he starts to bleat like a goat, or even if he goes ruminating, then it's the case!
Another 'knowie',  horns can remain hidden for a long time on a goat, so this is not always be seen, or proof; so stay alert and awake, dear Helle!

Just that you know 😕

dochtersions posted Wed, 22 August 2012 at 4:51 AM

Quote - Well, I am sure he has no horns, as I am the one who cuts his hair LOL!

Maybe you did cut his horns too, and you didn't even noticed this, my friend.

Of Karel I got the information that you have to pay attention to his poop('shit').

: Watch out to whether they are, or become already small droppings.

And now enough detail distributed here,  I'm going to concentrate on the bright colors.
It should be done with my chatter talk, okay?

Wishing you all a bright day!
And, don't worry, Helle!

helanker posted Wed, 22 August 2012 at 5:57 AM

Well I dont think my son (35) would appreciate that Jacomina.
