Subject: Is Smith-Micro getting ready to dump Poser?

I went to the Smith-Micro website to see what version of Poser was current since I haven't been using the program much. Oddly, it's not listed as one of their products on the product page. It's still in the store. Links from the store can eventually bring one to the main page for Poser. It appears that Smith-Micro is shifting their focus to more traditional business software solutions.

MetaCreations took a similar path before dumping the core graphics programs that had made them famous.

I don't know offhand what this means.

Let the rumors fly.

no. I don't think they are.

It is right there in front of you.  Look at the "store" tab.

The graphics products, unlike the communication software, have their own site:

your right. put mouse over  store, on the left it then shows POSER.... and to there to the store page... which is showing plenty of poser items.

Isn't a G1 class star too tiny to even make it to white dwarf stage? I thought Sol was bound for brown dwarf and eventual dwindling and cooling to a non radiant mass. Gotta be G3 at least to get a good nova from, barring external influence.....

But you may have stumbled onto Coop's plans for immortality. embed one unique thought in the code base of each release, then let it lay until computing gets strong enough, then.....

Anytime a business starts to disassociate itself from one of its products, it's not a great thing for that product. It's not necessarily a bad thing. It sure as hell doesn't represent a firm commitment to that product's welfare. A couple years ago, last time I looked, Poser was on the Smith-Micro Product page and now it's not. That's a pretty solid statement that Smith-Micro, at it's top levels, sees the future of the company lying in a different direction.

I'm not interested enough in exactly how Poser is being shifted/realigned within Smith-Micro to do any further digging. If anybody has any info or links, it would be interesting to see them.

For anybody that felt terribly clever about finding Poser in the SM store, please read the part of my original post that said, "It's still in the store. Links from the store can eventually bring one to the main page for Poser." I'm posting the link I found here because it's a much more comprehensive link than the my.smithmicro one. This appears to be the link maintained by the Poser development team whereas the my.smithmicro link isn't very informative.

Just because there are press releases and Poser activity doesn't mean the program is healthy at Smith-Micro. If memory serves me right (not that I'm betting on it), didn't E-Frontier buy Poser from Curious Labs a month or so before Poser 7 was released? The company, that owned the 3D program Hexagon, was advertising a new release and was accepting pre-orders just before selling it to DAZ and never released the update on their own. The update was released by DAZ.

Companies operate on many different levels and one hand doesn't always know what the other is doing. I have no inside information on whether or not Poser employees had much lead info before their unit was bought and sold multiple times. Everybody just keeps doing their job since there's often no way of knowing what is going on. Typically, only the top people at a company know what's really being done.

I even had one uncomfortable job where I was stuck in the middle of having to let a division of the company continue working on a project that I knew full well my management was talking about taking away from them and giving to another division to start from scratch. When the coup finally happened, my management didn't even tell me and I got waylaid at a meeting by being the only person in the room who was unaware that the project had finally been moved. Even though I was the project manager for the project being moved, my management was doing things behind my back as well as behind the backs of the division that was happlily proceeding as if the project were theirs to complete. It was something I had some inside information about, but I didn't have all of it. Guess who got all the blame when the new division picking up the project found out that all the behind-the-scenes wrangling came out of their time to do a six-month project such that they only really had two months to do it and failed? I'll give you a hint--it wasn't the upper management bosses that kept everybody in the dark.

Just because things look like "business as usual" doesn't mean they are. Does a Poser presentation at SIGGRAPH mean Smith-Micro is committed to the program?--Probably no more than Hexagon's owners, taking pre-order money for a new release of the software, had any intent of releasing it. Smith-Micro could be in the middle of selling Poser and still be at SIGGRAPH. All that press release means is that somebody representing the company is presenting information at the event. That has no bearing on whatever behind-the-scenes things are going on, if any.

Seeing Smith-Micro remove Poser from their product listings is akin to having your name taken off your company's organizational chart. It may not mean you're fired, but you can pretty well bet you're not on the short list for a promotion. Sometimes a product spun off to a satellite part of a company is a good thing because it often grants the spin-off more autonomy. It's also done to make it easier to get rid of that product. There are times when this kind of change allows a product to shine and there are times when it's the first step to divesting the company of a product they're no lonter interested in. I don't which case is happening here.

This is how SM describes themselves in their 2011 annual report...

Smith Micro Software, Inc. provides software and services that simplify, secure and enhance the mobile experience. The Company’s portfolio of wireless solutions includes a wide range of client and server applications that manage voice, data, video and connectivity over mobile broadband networks. Our primary customers are the world’s leading mobile network operators, mobile device manufacturers and enterprise businesses. In addition to our wireless and mobility software, Smith Micro offers personal productivity and graphics products distributed through a variety of consumer channels worldwide.

It more likely is that since SM's stock prices are in the toilet because thir core wireless networking businesses have taken a hit (sales down over 50% last year over 2010, mostly due to Verizon switching from their phone software ), they are emphasizing their core network/mobile solutions to appeal to enterprise customers and investors; none of their consumer products are featured on their homepage, just the enterprise stuff, because graphics and productivity software only represent $9 million of their $57 million in revenue...

(Something ese to complain about first)  I live about half a mile from the local Nestles plant, and they happen to be converting to choclolate.  The smell of chocolate maybe beats the smell of a foundry.  But after half a day, maybe not.

I have a couple of the 4 1/2 ounce bars of Hersheys Special Dark in my desk, but at the moment, I'm eating a cruller.

After half a day of smelling chocolate, you didn't think I'd be eating it, did you?

American chocolate is definitely an acquired taste. Sometimes, though, it's just what I want.

Alas, I believe Cadbury up here is made in Pennsylvania. I have to get chocolate imported from the UK to get an authentic UK taste. Fortunately, there's a big market for it here, so British chocolate/candy is not hard to find.

I'm a fan of Swiss chocolate. Always will be.

We also have silly warnings on food like "this product may cause an adverse reaction in childrens behaviour" as seen on Cheese and Tomato flavoured seaside Rock. Thats the whole idea of feeding it to them and handing the kids back to the parents:)

Different formulas, different rules. When Cadbury substituted some vegetable oil for cocoa butter, the Americans wouldn't let them call it chocolate either.

@ MrSparky - Pontefract ain't too far away; North Yorkshire, near Wakefield.

I used to work for a software house based there, though our office was in Sheffield.

Back when we had a chocolate industry worth mentioning, Terry's was good stuff.  Now, there's just about only Thornton's left of the widely known manufacturers, although there are some amazing independent chocolatiers in and around York and throughout North Yorkshire.

Toblerone is now owned by Kraft, who also own Terry's and Cadbury.  Rowntree is owned by Nestle.  Sad, sad world.

I'ts very expensive to buy online or at Whole Foods, but if you have a Trader Joe's near you, you are in luck. They have the basic bar, "Le Noir" 71% Bittersweet for under $3.00

I had a boss once who I could have probably had carnal knowledge of if I'd brought her enough Godiva. Me, I'll take good old Hershey's (with almonds) no matter what old or new Europe says.

*"The ambient temperature there is pretty close to the melting point of the European stuff so they have to use something with a higher melting point than cocoa butter." *

After Gulf War I, I ran across some bars that Hershey made for the troops* -* same thing higher melting point for desert use. It wasn't too bad, but not great either.

Oh, those Desert Bar things were so unpopular they were giving full size ones out to everyone who walked into the door of Chocolate World...lol. They were in the stores here for a total of about 6 months ;)

Heath bars are good, but have you ever had Almond Roca? I can eat that until I get sick, and have on occasion! The company that makes it, Brown and Haley, is only a few miles from where I live. They have a small store at the factory and you can get bags of broken pieces for really cheap.

I eat the Lindt dark, 85% Cocoa. Not watered down in the least.

But I agree, the Swiss milk chocolate is very milky. I couldn't eat it every day. Even Toblerone (which was my favorite when I lived in Germany).

Hershey Almond bars -- I used to have one after every 10k+ run. And a 100g bar after a race.

OP, I don't know what you're on about. The main Smith Micro site has never had any sort of accent on Poser that I can remember. Just because it's their only product that most of us care about doesn't mean that it's their linchpin. They can market it more effectively to our sort of market without surrounding it with their largely unrelated stuff, and most of their core stuff isn't going to benefit from Poser being prominently displayed on the Smith Micro site.

FWIW.

 Believeable!

You are getting OFF topic! What does this have to do with Chocolate? True Poser is a side business-but then again, SM does NOT make NOR SELL Chocolate! :-)

We have had some smaller chocolate making companies in the USA. I worked right next to one in Berkeley, CA that had some great chocolate. Hershey's bought them out-and it shut down. They started making and selling under the old name-but it was NOT as good.

You know how chocolate is an aphrodisiac?  And oysters?  Well, I came up with the ultimate in sex food... chocolate covered oysters.

Only thing is, you have to swallow 'em quick or you get a stiff neck.
