Hello everyone,
I was wondering if there is a modern aircraft carrier modell available (Nimitz-Class). I also search for modern battleships but it seems the only adequate modell is the valley forge by vanishing point. Don't get me wrong: I know there are quite a few WW2 modells around there, but I need ships built later than 1990 :)
If someone knows where to get these modells for an acceptable price let me know! Thank you in advantage!

Perhaps you mean something else, but "modern battleship" is an oxymoron, or at least a null set.
The last US battleship was launched in 1944.

The last US battleships have also been decomissioned and turned into museams. Big guns aren't used any more by the navy. In fact our only crusiers are techincally closer to a destroyer and used to be called destroyers.
It's all missiles, jets, and drones nowadays.

There will be 3 apparently, so maybe this is the future of the modern warship...

I was stationed on a Knox Class Destroyer Escourt (DD1080 the USS Paul) and would love to find one of those as well as a carrier as new as the Saratoga, one of our sister ships from Mayport Basin. Any leads out there on those?
Oh, and there are a couple of semi-retired battleships, names and hull numbers escape me, that are set up for quick recommission in case they are needed. Trust me when I say that if you are some place and wake up one morning to find one of those off your coast, you know something is wrong!

The one at this link is far more accurate a Nimitz-class carrier (the Eisenhower, CVN-69), but also far more expensive at $130.

IMHO, as a Navy veteran and having spent several years staring across the basin at carriers, the Eisenhower is the best of the offerings here, but highly over priced. The other two are too boxy, not "fluid" enough but they would probably do for viewing by anyone who didn't know the difference.

Missouri and Wisconsin provided gunfire support during Desert Storm in 1991.
There's a Nimitz class carrier at Foundation 3D in Lightwave format. Look under resources in the downloads > meshes > Military > seacraft section. Free registration required. Nice Quality basic model with no accessories (e.g. aircraft, tugs etc.). It may import into Poser but I don't know if Poser can import the .lws scene file or only the individual .lwo files. I use PoseRay. If you select all the .lwo files at once on import, the will come in assembled and you can then simply export as .obj. One note, there is a caution.jpg image map that is referenced as caution.bmp in the Lightwave file. Either convert it to .bmp first or locate the .jpg in PoseRay's material tab.

turbosquid.com (search for aircraft carrier) has models from $30 to $900
The last four U.S. battleships where the Iowa class, 1944:
Iowa
Missouri
New Jersey
Wisconsin
and correct, you do not want to wake up with one of them in your harbor if the US is angry with you. They are all retired now (not on the Naval Vessel Register) and deployed for public viewing in Hawaii/Pearl (Missouri), Los Angeles (Iowa), Camden (New Jersey) and Norfolk (Wisconsin).

As a civilian visitor I have been aboard New Jersey and Iowa out here in California, including New Jersey when actually in service. Mighty ships for a mighty Navy.

I popped over to Foundation 3D to have a look because I kinda like boats. One of my mom's boyfriends was in the Navy (or maybe Coast Guard, their suits look very alike) and he showed us the place where they kept them a few times.
Couple of cautions, Something strange happens to the downloads if you use IE, so I had to use Firefox.
The aircraft carrier is totally NOT UV mapped, which is OK if you stay in Lightwave and use the procedural shaders that come with it.
Also it has a lot of long thin triangular polygons, so I had to use the "Triple" command in LW and then subdivide to stop the holes from coming up in Poser. There are 17 materials zones, so it would take a while just to start this on the road to "Poserization".
operaguy posted Sat, 01 September 2012 at 10:27 PM
I am gently smiling at the use of the term "boats."

I know there are no battleships anymore. I meant cruisers, frigates and so on which accompany the carriers ;)
I also found the nimitz carrier on 3dstudio... but seriously... who pays 130$ for this? It's insane!
The models on Foundation 3D look very good and would fit for my use. But I can't download them :( I completed registration and tried several browsers, but I can't download them! Are these models "premium content"? Or can somebody help me?
Thank you in advantage!

There are quite a few free aircraft carriers/warships for Flight Simulator. They're not in a Poser-friendly format but maybe if you contact the author they can provide one

There are some battleships, even futuristic sci-fi gothic style space-going ships (boats but crusing through space) at Trimble 3Dwarehouse (formerly under Google). You'll need to do a search and then download and convert.

The models are free. You might contact them. The faq of downloading mentions that registration may take a bit to go through. I regged there years ago & don't remember how long it took. Being the weekend may be a factor. When registered and logged in, you get a download button on the model's page. I downloaded the model yesterday using Opera with no problems.
My 3D computer is down so I can't see it in Poser. The only view I have is the low res preview from PoseRay. There are actually 47 material zones according to UVMapper, so yeah if you want anything beyond the basic colors it will take some work. The only area UVMapped is the red caution lines. Note form the readme that the creator wants a credit on use if that makes a difference to you.
The other option is Trimble 3D Warehouse http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/
There are plenty there but you'll either need the demo of SketchUp or the free vereion with a freeware script to convert to .obj. Quality and your results using them in Poser will vary.
Sadly, I don't seem to see as many free quality ships and aircraft these days. I'm glad I grabbed all I could find 5-6 years ago :-)

Finally it worked! :) I got my carrier from Foundation 3D. Seems I was just too unpatient! Great thanks to lmckenzie for the hint :D And thanks to all who searched the hell out of the web :) Finally I got some warships in my collection too!
I managed to import the lightwave obj into poser and to combine some different parts of them to a full figure. Textures were a bit more difficult, but it worked out nicely too :) so I'm happy now!
Thanks to everyone!

not even that would stop the gosport ferry;)
seriously though, one visited a few years back Bush or Esinhower (forget which) and that had to park in stokes bay!
Wanted to get some good shots and that proved impossible. Security was seriously tight.
Local no fly zone, beach patrols dissauding folks with big lens. Thought she'll have to pass the mouth of the harbour when leaving, Spinaker tower would be perfect. Ship left early and the tower was opened late. :(
Though have got some of the last day of Ark Royal and Manchester.

Note I made a typo. The ShareCG model is the WWII Enterprise of course, not WWI, though that would make an interesting alternative history

What has that got to do with the OT queery? Any warship that tried to get into Portsmouth univited would be sunk by RN or RAF or my grandma.

Glad you got your aircraft carrier.
I was going to say, most flight sim manufacturers are touchy on their models. Even the free ware stuff. The format is speciffically written for FSX and you probably and sadly won't find too many out there that would do an .obj format, simply because of the security risks for their models.
