Subject: Trisha for V4

Hi, Folks!

Here is Trisha for V4. She is modeled after a dear friend, an old maid I have loved for many years. I have several questions that I am sure someone can point me to. I have created Trisha using DieTryings's morphs, based on the V4 base model. My question is this - I want to be able to distribute this characther, if for nothing else in the Freestuff forum.  I have all these concerns about packaging, copyrigts, on and on ad nauseum. I have no intention of breaking copyright laws, so I am asking those in the know to point me to a tut that can help me make the right decisions and avoid copyright infringement. From what I have read in the forums, this is a pretty touchy area, and I have no desire to offend anyone or make a mistake concerning copyright. This is a work of love, and I wish to treat it as such. Can someone give a tired old man a direction or two here? There is no postwprk done on the model. It was rendered using BB's VSS. The skin textures have been "borrowed" from Sabby, and I want to be sure that this isn't an issue. I need to do something about that. Newskin? I am more than willing to change this. My love to you all...

Peace,

Charlie~

Trisha

Can't use the texture... additionally you can't use a MR texture for a freebie at all, so your options are to create your own texture set. Very Difficult. As far as the morphs go, I don't think that you can redistribute those at all. Even if you were working strictly from Daz morphs you have to do some careful prep work before creating the INJ files. I think this character is probably only good for your own personal use. When you set out to create a character for distribution you need to practice some forethought about copyright considerations.

Now, if you had created all of the morphs in an external modeling program and derived the textures from a merchant resource with intention of sale (not freebie) you would be all set.

...Check the ReadMe on the DieTrying morph package.

Trisha looks charming. I can see though where copyright issues can be complicated. In general you simply cant use another person's work as your own. I'm a writer, and someone else cant copy a paragraph from my novel and pretend it's his own work. On the other hand, he could quote my work in an essay, or even in his own novel, if it isnt extensive and has attribution. Plotlines, character quirks, literary tricks are wide open--just dont borrow my language. But in these characters? I often flip a texture map from one character to another. Eyes, too. Or I will alter the color of the map, or some details. I'm sure I can use this for my eyes only--I sit here at the computer gloating over my work, no one cares but me--but can I toss the video up to YouTube? With different body and face textures, her original waist morphed into a tiny circle, legs lengthened, etc--the original purchased figure so modified that the original creator probably wouldnt recognize it--is that still legal? And what if I charge for views? I've been presuming I can buy a figure and modify it any way I wish--this goes for props too--and use it freely in my own published videos. But is this acceptible? I understand I cant sell or give away the figure itself, or its texture maps, I cant modify a texture map and give it away, I cant make a Trisha figure like charlie43 has done, using someone else's texture maps, and offer it around--but if I put together such a figure, could I use her in a video, or illustration, and sell that?

Charlie,

I presume you are refering to these morphs?

http://www.sharecg.com/v/58061/browse/11/Poser/182-Morphs-for-Victoria-4

The package has no readme, so you could could drop a note asking if you could include the morphs.  However, since it sounds like this is as spun-dialed character,  you could simply distribute a pose with the dial settings, specifying which morph packs are needed...

WandW, I think your reply just gave me an incredibly simple solution to a problem I've been stuggling with... It was so obvious that I guess it never occured to me!

Oh yeah, DieTrying states that the Morphs are unrestricted use in the commentaries on the page... Guess your in luck Charlie43!

Just check in the readme that it doesn't just mean unrestricted for the render ie if it says you can't give away any parts of the package.

For the textures I completely disagree with primorge saying textures are difficult. there are lots of commercial texture resource packs where you just make some alterations in photoshop and then you can use them for whatever.  well some of them might say you can't give away as freebies but some say you can so you have to pick the right pack that suits your purpose.

good luck with your project.

By the way she does not look like an "old maid"

She was referring to unrestricted use as in distribution. Almost all commercial MR packs are restricted for freebie distribution. creating textures from scratch IS difficult. Guess you only skimmed my post, or you don't understand what I'm referring to. Case in point, it was already established during the thread that the package didn't include a ReadMe. I downloaded the pack and can confirm this. DieTrying states in her commentary on the page that the file is unrestricted in total.

Aren't you generally a pre-made content user, esther?

primorge ( ) posted Tue, 25 September 2012 at 1:47 PM

I react this way because I do a lot of custom character creation for myself, including textures and morphs. Your post suggests that I don't know what I'm talking about, which indicates to me that you don't understand my post.

...Or maybe I've had too much coffee, starting to sound like BB. Alright shutting up now.

estherau ( ) posted Wed, 26 September 2012 at 6:37 AM

Yes, correct.  And if I wanted a texture for a character I was planning to give away, I wouldn't create one, I would use a texture resource to make one.

I guess that is the difference between the word make and the word make.

ie you  might think you make an artwork using V4 if you have bought the clothes or made the clothes or bought a texture resource. I think of a texture resource as the paint set. I'm not sure I'm being clear.  But obviously what we think of "making" are two different things.
