Subject: Help: Pooling Shadows on Cloth Sim

heyas;

 

   This is a poncho i built, it has two sides (not double-sided faces, but outside faces and inside faces).  i'm using the ancient p4 style lights.  you know, the shadow mapped ones.  its the 'soft global' set that came out... way back when.

 

  okay, so... the cloth poncho shown here has these really dark shadows(?) pooling in it, and not being right.  i put a point light up over it, but that had no effect on these things.  what magic voodoo trick am i supposed to do to get rid of them?

Looks like the back side is coming thru the front side. Poser's dynamic cloth doesn't lent itself well to two sided geometry.

I ran into the same problem with my hoodie, with the hood in the back, due to the facing of the polys. However, if you check "normals forward" in the materials, you should get better lighting.

d'oh!

 

   okay, we'll see what that does.  my problem is, of course, the inside of the back fold of the poncho is visible, so i had to model it.  :/  ...

 

oh!  oh, the pools are gone, but the back of the cloth is still poking through the front.  hmmm...  i dont suppose there's any self-collision or pass-through preventative things on the simulation?  :/  if i re-run a simulation, do i have to set the magnets to zero before i start?  (i put magnets on it afterwards.)

 

or... maybe i can finese the suckers away...!

okay, i'm just doing quick and dirty...

 

  grabbing polys with the grouping tool and assigning a material set to 'air.'

The best way to keep cloth from poking thru itself if it's two sided is if the normals on both sides are facing each other. Just for shits and giggles, see if flipping the normals works. Then make sure "Normal's forward" is checked in the materials settings. I've wanted to try this, but I'll let you be the guinea pig if you're willing to try it. LOLOL. Might mean we can actually have dynamic cloth with THICKNESS. LOL. I have another way if that doesn't work.
