Right now I have an Intel i5-750 Lynnfield CPU. I'm looking to upgrade and am trying to decide between AMD's FX-8xxx series and the various Intel CPUs. From what I've seen, the main difference between the two is that the 8xxx series is more powerful compared to similarly priced Intel Processors when the 8 cores are efficiently used. Since my main 3d program is Carrara, would I be better off going with AMD or Intel?

If you want pure speed, intel wins bigtime when you overclock it to the max.But you need to be a little skilled for ovrrclocking.
At default speed, intel 3770k beats amd fx 8350.
Basing my conclusions on Cinebench raytracing benchmark, while it is not Carrara, it shoyld be very close.
Same results for povray 3.7.

If you have a decent budget, the intel 3930k hexacore overclocked kills everything.
