Archangel, an elite squad put together to achieve objectives that the US can’t by normal means. The costumes they wear give them anonymity so that the government has complete deniability. They wear a special chest plate armor which allows them to communicate with their superiors, and monitors their biometrics. They each possess special abilities and powers to enhance their effectiveness.

I finally have enough of a story and the initial lead characters to get this thing going.

If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.

rokket posted Sun, 16 December 2012 at 3:05 AM

1.  Simon West.

Simon was the team leader 7 years ago when Miki made her debut as a CIA agent. After that operation, he was asked to attend a special camp where he and 14 other candidates were given a battery of tests; both physical and mental. They had blood drawn, which they were lead to believe was to insure they were healthy. In fact, it was so their DNA could be tested to see if it was compatible with the formula they would receive if they passed the initial tests. Simon was the only one to make it all the way through. The formula gave him enhanced strength and stamina, mental prowess, and the ability to shoot lightning from his hands, as well as draw it out of the air in short bursts. He can’t sustain drawing lightning out of the air for long, as it weakens him. It is only a last resort. He is not invulnerable, but he has a large pain threshold which serves him well. He is the team leader. Code name: Green Lightning.

2. Sergeant Henry “Hank” Thompson.

Hank Thompson was an Army Special Forces team member. His unit was hit by an IED while on assignment in Iraq, and he was left brain dead. He has no family, and no living relatives, so the team who created Green Lightning convinced the Army to turn his body over to them. Since his brain had ceased to function, they couldn’t use the same formula that was used on Simon. They went about replacing destroyed body parts with electronic ones. The result was a cyborg entity nicknamed Gabriel. He has greatly enhanced strength and speed, his eye piece has infrared, x-ray, and sensor array capabilities. He also has a nasty little surprise embedded in his right arm. A liquid metal blade was implanted there that he can extend and retract at will. He can’t speak, but he doesn’t need to. His programming makes him follow all lawful orders without question. He was assigned as Miki’s bodyguard when she was recruited onto the team. His doctors claim he feels no emotion, no pain, nothing. But he seems to be exceptionally fond of Miki, beyond the scope of his assignment. Code name: Gabriel.

If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.

3. Miki Kanashita.

Miki was recruited to the CIA 7 years ago. She was invited to join Simon’s field office, but that never came to pass because of Simon’s subsequent assignment to Archangel. Miki spent the next seven years going back and forth from field agent to lab rat. Her first lab assignment was to crack the laptop taken from an enemy operative. Although she had no idea what was on it, she knew it was big. She didn’t know it would lead to the CIA forming Archangel. She is recruited to Archangel after being rescued by Simon and Hank during a failed mission. She has natural gymnastic and martial arts abilities, but her DNA wasn’t compatible with the formula. For that reason, she is given a stylized electronics embedded Ninja outfit to increase her natural agility, strength and stamina. Hank is assigned as her bodyguard initially, but after she is given the suit, she doesn’t really need him. Just don’t tell Hank that. Code name: Black Star Ninja.

If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.

rokket posted Sun, 16 December 2012 at 3:06 AM

4. Karen Russell.

Karen came by her powers differently than the others. She was a research assistant in a lab deep in the desert in Nevada. A lab accident resulting in an explosion transformed her into living fire. She can generate fire from her body and call it out of the air. She doesn’t wear the special plate armor, since it would literally melt off of her when she is in her fire form. She didn’t start out as one of the good guys. Her initial reaction to her transformation was rage. It took Miki to convince her to use her abilities for the good. Karen struggled with her weight before the transformation, and she harbors hatred toward men that she still carries with her. Even though it seems to be buried, the rest of the team is still cautious of her. She is not given undercover assignments because her transformation is triggered by her emotions. If she loses control of her abilities she could do catastrophic damage before she can be contained.  Code name: Blaze.

By the way, here is the bar I used for the renders above. Let me know if you want it, and I will see if I can package it and get into the freebies section:

Nice to see you back, Rokket. Looks interesting... Perhaps you'll let me offer some critique and advice when it comes together a little more. I'm a long time time comics fan and have spent some time around others who were professionals in the medium, even considered attending the Joe Kubert school of comics and animation when I was younger (R.I.P, Joe). Instead opted for a fine art education. My best friend, also deceased, ended up going there.

Anyway, Have you ever read Will Eisner's 'Comics and Sequential Art'?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comics_and_Sequential_Art

Scott McCloud's 'Understanding Comics' is also really excellent!

Both definitely offer inspiration in terms of the technical aspect of the medium.

Looking forward to seeing more of your efforts!

Yeah, it's a little daunting, but I am about ready now. The first 3 episodes are written with a cliff hanger at the end of each. I have been studying how series are put together, and I am certain I can entertain and keep 'em coming back once this thing takes off.

Any advise on a good web site to use? I don't want to do the slide show thing like yours, so I guess maybe get a free site from google and learn some HTML?

Rokket, I just recently started building a website through Weebly... Pretty easy and free! you can have as many pages as you want of images as long as each image is under 10mb. The site is highly recommended.

Esther could probably give you more advice on this topic but weebly is pretty damn nice.

rokket posted Tue, 18 December 2012 at 3:43 AM

@ esther and primorge: no, I am not going to toon this one up. I prefer the semi-realistic look of what I have so far. I will be doing a lot of post work, though, especially on Blaze. There is a scene I was working on where Green Lightning attempts to capture her when she first appears with a specialized shackle gun. She is in human form, but transforms when he locks the shackle on her ankle. That's also when he learns she can pseudo-fly by heating the air around her. She takes off and after she gets a few hundred meters into the air, she melts the shackle and lets him fall.

I'll look into that one. I want to be able to post my pics as large as possible, so that there is no mistaking what is going on in each frame. I thought about just going with frame-by-frame, but I would lose the comic aspect of it. So I will probably go with a comic book style page, just a bit larger than 8.5 x 11 in.

Anyway feel like Blabbing, Kind of OT... but maybe not. This Plug-in for Carrara by Digital Carvers Guild is high on my wishlist:  http://www.digitalcarversguild.com/plugin.php?ProductId=15.

Images I've seen made with this are incredibly nice (almost as nice as Cinema4d's Toon features). Just spent $40.00 on Terai Yuki 2 (she so cute!) a little while ago so I'm Cg cash strapped for a little while.

All right, time to top off the coffee.

Nice work, Rokket. You're going to make all of the content from scratch? That's one hell of an undertaking! Your modeling skills will be sharpened to a razors edge with such an endeavor. I would relent and utilize a lot of the excellent freebies out there to lessen the work load... If it were me.

I don't have Carrara. I am still fussing with open source things right now, besides poser. I learned how to use a few of Blender's features while I was away, and that was what pushed me to where I am now.

Yeah, because I have been finding that a lot of the freebies I try to use have something that is just a little off. So I usually end up just making my own stuff. I will probably be ready to to be a vendor by the time the first edition of my comic has run... lol...

I am still working on it. I have to shape the butt stock to a more conventional rifle shape, and the area in front of the triggar will eventually become where you load the CO2 cartridge that fires the projectile. The shackle self locks when it meets any type of resistance.

There is a nylon rope attached to the shackle that you can lock when you capture your perp. It won't reel in however, when the shackle is closed, so whatever line you paid out, that's what you have to work with until you can subdue them.

She and Green Lightning were the only hold overs from my original idea, when the storyline was centered on Simon as Green Lightning. But now the story is centered on Miki, though Green Lightning is still the leader and will see a lot of action in the early stages of the story.

Blaze was originally thought of as the antagonist in both version of my story. In the first version, it turns out that Green Lightning's best friend, who was going to be played by James was the real bad guy. In the new story, she starts out bad, then goes good.... sort of.

This one is a potential bad apple. I am still making her main outfit. It's not a superhero costume, but it's still cool.

She is Alyssa Montegue. She can be compared to Joan Collins' character on the 80's tv show "Dynasty". She is pretty much self-centered and narcissistic. She is friendly toward you only if it suits her purpose.

She is going to be fun to write.

The small magazine looking thing is a CO2 cartridge which allows you to fire the weapon only once. It slides into the pistol grip like a standard 40 Cal or 9MM pistol magazine. There is a cartridge release on the left hand side of the pistol grip to eject the spent cartridge. Effective range is the length of the Kevlar embedded chord (not shown) which is attached to the shackle. The chord is 15 meters long.

The chord is wound into a small package known as a 'load' at the factory, and slides into the top of the actual magazine, which is in front of the triggar guard. There is a bright orange arrow on the top of the load indicating which way faces to the front. Once it locks in place, a pull of the racking arm (not shown, it is on the left hand side of the weapon) pulls the end of the line forward and locks it onto the support arm of the shackle. There will be an audible sound indicating that the line is locked into the shackle support. If you don't hear that sound, rerack the weapon. If you don't hear it on the second try, remove the load and replace it with a new one. To remove the load, push slightly foward on the back side using the thumb of your non-firing hand and then pull up.

There are front and rear sights on the top of the weapon. It can be fired from the shoulder like a standard rifle, or from the hip. Firing from the shoulder is the most accurate means. The shackle can be aimed at the ankle or wrist of the perpetrator, but should NOT be aimed at center mass nor the neck. Shackling a suspect's neck will cause death.

The shackle can be fired at the bicept, but has been known to miss, and tear the muscle from the perpetrator. It is therefore advised not to use the bicept as a target unless no other means present themselves to capture the suspect.

rokket posted Wed, 19 December 2012 at 4:40 AM

You know, I've been thinking, I still think it would look heaps better with just a little tooning.  you could use a toon filter in poser, overly the image onto the original, and then turn the tooned one down to opacity of 28% so there wasn't much.  but I think even a little bit would look incredibly good.

Because poser people never really look real anyway, unless someone spends forever on one still image.

I'll do a render later and see what happens.

The idea had been tossed about making an animated film again. Someone saw what I was doing and started talking about it. I almost got hooked, but told them I tried that and it didn't work well for me, so I went to the comic idea. They have never used Poser or anything we work with, so they don't know. They assume it's load the stuff and hit the make movie button...

oh I don't mean within poser.  use a photoshop filter or filter for whatever compositing software you use afterwards for your postwork.  (I do it from within poser but I think if you're not so keen on a toon look, then the photoshop method would work fine for you).  do you not own any postwork filters?  or should i say photoshop actions.  you can just overlay your tooned one over the original and turn down the effect until you are happy with it.

You've got a pretty good start here, rokket.  Building props and clothing from scratch is a lot of work, I do it some too for the same reasons you posted.  I currently need a full custom small city.  Just downloaded the 30 day trial of City Engine, I hope that's enough time to get it made.

Anyway, reading this thread yesterday inspired me to get a new website up and running.  The old one got deleted when my ISP stopped providing free web space.  I render in Vue like estheru and do a whole lot of post work in Photoshop and Manga Studio.

I have city engine too.  It is enough time but u don't own the rights to use the assets - including the low poly cars and facades in your renders. So it may not be enough time to get your own content in there.   It does work well in poser. Consider the indi licence if ESRI still has that  one since taking city engine over.

for city scenes you can either render a city scene like one of stonemason's or dreamlands and make an HDRI or you can buy HDRIs. I do both.  but I render my HDRIs in vue which you probably don't have. YOu can get a camera and software for making HDRIs and you can walk around city streets taking city photos.  then you can map  your spherical HDRI to a dome and then walk your figure around inside the scene in poser.

rokket - yeah, the pages are not optimized for the web and are kind of hard to read.  I planning to get it printed, that affects page and font size.  Maybe having a hard to read web version will get people to order the 'real' version?

Do use as many different Poser figures as you can, they help give variety to your characters.

estherau - Thanks for the heads up on the City Engine usage rights thing, I missed that.  I did get a road network done, that's the main thing I wanted.

Also, I combine renders and drawing, trying to get my own unique look.  I couldn't do it without Poser and Vue.

I played around with the toon filter in GIMP. The results are better than if I do it in Poser, but I don't like that I don't have much control over how thick the lines are. I do have control over how dark they are, and GIMP toons the whole scene, whereas Poser just does a general outline type of render.

Here is the finished product.

I checked on that back when I had GIMP 2.6, and I am now using 2.8...

There are brushes that people have made from the Photoshop brushes that work in GIMP. I am not sure about other things. Since I only just decided to go the comic route, I hadn't bothered to find out if other things work or not.

Again, I may scrap the toon filter idea all together and just go with the pseudo realistic look. I have to figure that one out. There are things that I want to do that don't translate well in toon filters.

The same process I used when I was writing screenplays: no tv, no radio, no internet, no outside interferences. I will write it out screenplay style, then transfer the story to story board and then renders.

I am still thinking not to use standard comic format, and just go frame by frame, so that I can render to 1920x1080 pixels. I am looking at different options right now.

Rokket, I must say I'm impressed by your venture: every item made by oneself! Wow!

It seems, from what you have posted, that you are sort of decided on the graphic style. May I just suggest something?

The font, Comic Sans... Well, the name may be alluring but trust me, this font screams "I'm new to online comics".
Let me just post a link to one pretty nice book: http://www.amazon.com/Thou-Shall-Not-Comic-Sans/dp/0321812816

There are dozens of free (and viable for commerical use) fonts out there, and each and every one of those is better than comic sans. Take a look here: http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/list/style/Comic

I, personally, am fond of Zud Juice from Blambot: http://www.blambot.com/font_zudjuice.shtml (the site has already been mentioned here)

Another thing is lighting the scene. Some scenes in Poser just turn out flat / with no depth. Or the colours get that dustbowl treatement. It's mostly lighting fault. If we take a look at film and tv productions, the skin and scenes in the high budget ones look so good because the light is fake ;) i.e. it is simulated, not re-created.

A nice fill-in light, a key-note light  - the parameters differ with every scene (well, sometimes they change in one scene a dozen times). Adding extra contrast in postwork is also a good idea. Some Poser-made comics look "underfunded" (for a lack of a better word) because they pay little interest in lighting...

Sorry for the long post, I just used to create Poser comics and am working on a new project for quite some time now. I have indeed started with comic sans and sub-par lighting myself ;) There's a proof at the top of the post ;) Then I changed a thing or two... (and then i stopped creating, a trend I'm trying to subvert now)

rokket posted Wed, 02 January 2013 at 3:21 AM

I have no intention of using the comic sans font when I start the actual comic. I used it because I don't have the software I am going to use when I start the comic. I will be making extensive use of Blambot and a few other sites once I get into production mode. I am still in script at this time.

Most of what I posted in here was 5 minute renders just to get my point across. What I will put online will be far above the quality that you have seen here.

But thanks for your comments. Don't worry, I have my bases covered. It's the story that will be the deciding factor for me, not the renders.

I too think the script is one of the most important things in a comic book (as is plot in the novel). That and interesting characters.

Once the dialogue and the narration flows, folowed by good camerawork, everything is fine ;)

I like the work so far, but I agree with Ariah. Can I make a suggestion as well? Did you ever see the application Comic Life? There on version 2 and it's not expensive, but will take your comics to the next level.

Also play with the lights in your scene, don't use the same settings or light sets in every scene. Find the lights that represent the mood in the scene and make them stand out. On top of that I would say move the camera around a bit more to get the perfect angles.

I've attached a sample comic I made a while back for fun. It's not top notch, but gives a good example of what comic life can add to your comics and how you can use different light settings and camera views.

I also just remembered something I learned regarding backgrounds. You don't always have to use a whole scene with backgrounds. Often when focussing in on characters in for example a conversation, you can leave the background white. It's done quite often, that way you draw attention to the characters and not to what's going on behind them. It also gives a certain peace back to your comic. You can do hectic scenes with lot's of items in the scene, but then you need to bring it back to something simple in the next scene, to keep balance and don't let the it be all overwhelming.

Sorry, you can't read this one most likely, it's in Dutch. I'm making this for a non-profit organisation. When it's done it will be printed by a proffesional printer. I did work for them before and they printed various comics I made. It's very cool to see your comics on the web, but it's another thing to see them printed in a booklet and realise they just ordered 10,000 copies of it. That's kind of exciting to know that more then 10,000 people will actually hold your comic in their hands and read it.

Last example..... keep it simple at times, saves you a lot of work, but still gets the story across. Don't be afraid to zoom in and out to make the point you want. As you can see, I'm using different styles of renders in various stories. It depends on what it will be used for. I don't toonify my comics in photoshop or so to get the comic look, I find it a bit distracting and all the effort still doesn't bring the look I'm after, so I decided to keep it all Poser and not toonify them, but as you can see, special effects are added when needed in photoshop.

Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks...

I realize the thread is now 5 pages long, but if you had read through it, you would see that ComicLife2 had been mentioned, as well as a few other software items.

I am not going to toon up my renders either. I am thinking I won't go the traditional comic route either, so I won't use a comic software. I want my panels to be optimized for the web and be 16x9 resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), so I will probably be doing them frame by frame instead of a comic page. I have no intentions of ever printing it.

I am doing a graphic novel. I am taking a break from the writing to get some other things done, and in looking at my script, a serial just isn't going to work for me. So it's going to be 110-120 page script that I will translate into a graphic novel. I will do all the renders and get the whole story done before I post online.

I have to rewrite the first 40 pages. I didn't like the story arc, so I am changing it now.

rokket posted Sat, 05 January 2013 at 12:10 AM

With the software I do have, if I need to do split panels or anything else, I have that capability.

Thank you to everyone for your advice and knowledge. Being a hard headed man, I am going to see what I can come up with first, before I give in and take the advice, but I appreciate it all the same.

See you in a few weeks...

Yes it would and it will be fine for creating a graphic novel as well. It's excellent for creating online comics / graphic novels as well.

Artwork and 3DToons items, create the perfect place for you toon and other figures!

I want my panels to be optimized for the web and be 16x9 resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), so I will probably be doing them frame by frame instead of a comic page. I have no intentions of ever printing it.

Oh, so it's going to be more cinematic in approach. i like that. You may want to check out this webcomic:

It has - I believe - similar art approach, at least on the surface.

The story there is quite complex and characters abound ;) I like it, though. It's still pretty static and the light could use some alteration ;)

Quote - I have to rewrite the first 40 pages. I didn't like the story arc, so I am changing it now.

I know what you mean. I've been re-designing the first issue of my graphic novel for a year now. And recasting the parts.

Good luck then!

I downloaded it again, and I will install it when I am ready to start putting the story together. My only issue is that I will start really liking it, but with my current financial state, the wife won't let me buy it. Even if it is cheap. I will just have to hope she will give in once she sees what I've done with it.

I see what you mean. I don't believe they are using Poser, though. Doesn't matter. There is a way to bring life to renders and a way not to. I will have that one down before I commit anything to copy.

I hope to have something going soon. Life is getting in the way of things right now.

My story opens 30 years in the future, Esther. I need something that looks a bit more 'futuristic' than the standard wheelchair. Plus then I couldn't say that everything was modeled by me...

Nahhhh, I would never let it get that far. That chair that I posted is almost complete. Total time on it so far: less than 45 minutes. I can go from inspiration to usable in about an hour, so I think I am doing pretty good. And if it comes to it and I can't make it, I will definitely download a freebie and use that.

But most of what I am making are static props, and occasionally something with a couple moving parts. None of these things are very complicated or high poy. They are mostly procedural textures too. I am not taking the time to UV map any of it. I will do all that in the future and upload them all in the freebies section when I am done.

This includes a ton of dresses and other things that I made for the female characters. I don't think I would give away their superhero things.

Pretty far off. He's over 70 years old and has been blind since he was in his early 40's due to the explosion. All I will tell you is that the story I am writing is seen through his eyes (yes, there is a pun in there somewhere). He was there. He is being interviewed for a magazine. Archangel was thought to be a myth, and a couple reporters find out that he may know the truth behind all of it, so they interview him.

And one of the nurses has a dog that she brings into the  nursing home.  she pats it and then touches the patients food but when the patients objected they were all brought into a room and asked who objects to the dog being in the dining room, and everyone was too scared to say except for one patient, even though secretly they all complained about it too each other.

and when they have inspections they are too scared to say what is really happening there.

We live in a subtropical climate and when they go into high care they can't have aircon.  In low care they can have it if they pay for it.

There's a lot more stories.

I feel for them. It's a pity when we treat our elderly like they are a burden on us. If more people would stand up for them, they would perhaps get better treatment. Then they would have their superhero.

Unfortunately, my guy isn't much of a superhero any longer. And he is living in a pretty lush retirement home. In fact, he took up smoking just to piss the nurses off, and none of them has had the courage to tell him he can't smoke in the lounge. They just give him dirty looks when they pass by him. And of course, he can't see them doing that.

I will send you a copy of my first act when it's done. I am going by U.S. movie standard, so I have a 3 act play. Act one will end under 20 pages, judging by action movie standard of a page per minute of screen time. I think you will enjoy it. And you can let me know if it hits the mark, and if it kept you reading or if you started skimming... and of course if you can't wait to see what is going to happen next...

The first edition of my wheelchair.

This one looks too much like something you would find in a clinic today, so I am going to redo it.

I am also not too fond of the controls on the right arm rest. Doesn't fit the overall sleekness of the model.

And it poly HUGE... over 70,000 on it. I was going to decimate it, but that screwed everything up.

Hello , thanks for sharing.

Looks "strange", if I may say so.

The seatpan looks a bit "long-deep" compared to the height.
And with those small front wheels, its gonna be very, if not impossible, hard to drive along.
And??? In 30 years or so, a PC-tablet would "standard" be incorporated. :-)

rokket posted Fri, 11 January 2013 at 5:21 AM

Awesome suggestions! Thanks!

The only problem with using a tablet is that the intended patient is blind, so I am thinking it will be a voice activated unit with sensors and auto drive.

And I did the seat pan like that on purpose, but I guess it didn't turn out as good as I thought it would.

The front wheels were a modelling error. Instead of mounting them on the side of the supports like I originally intended, I went for mounting them under the foot rests. I ended up scaling them down to fit under there and screwed the pooch.

Back to the drawing board... errr, the modelling app!!!!

rokket posted Sat, 12 January 2013 at 7:53 AM

Ok, I reworked the chair.

It's got an auto drive system that is voice activated. In the next pics, it's hard to see because I have to redo the textures, but I actually put a rack and pinion steering unit on the front wheels. It took me almost 2 hours to render 3 pics. I can't use it if it's going to take that long, so I have to find simpler ways to get the textures done.

If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.

rokket posted Sat, 12 January 2013 at 7:55 AM

The chair itself is a composite of really super lightweight materials surrounded by memory foam. The sensors are built in. The seat is a biometrics monitor, so if the patient is having problems, the chair will know and automatically go swiftly to the infirmary.

If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.

rokket posted Sat, 12 January 2013 at 8:01 AM

The last render is of the auto drive disengage lever. It's not recommended to pull it, however, because it disengages the biometrics monitor as well. A design flaw.

There is a story going around the hospital that a nurse and male intern were getting frisky in the back room with one of these chairs and forgot to disengage the auto drive. When things got hot and heavy, the chair, which is designed for the elderly, misread the signals it was receiving from the randy lovers and rushed them to the infirmary. Unfortunately, the chair moved so fast neither could get off of it, and their clothing was left behind.
