Subject: alternative to purchased skin textures?

I do okay with morphs as far as creating characters but mine always look essentially the same because I can not afford lots of skin textures. Case in point, the whole time I've had Michael 3 I've had one texture for him. I'm still stuck with good old M3 for a bit longer and now I can't even find skin textures for him to purchase because everyone else has moved on. My questions are - using Poser 7 is there any alternative to loading a purchased texture? And do any of you know of any vendors who still have M3 textures for sale? I have one set on my wishlist and that's it. I did try the search engine but it didn't really turn up anything.

thanks

You could either:

  1. Make your own from scratch

  2. Adapt the one you have.  Remember, V3, A3, D3 and S3 skins will also work to a certain extent.

  3. Search in Freestuff

I don't think there will be any on sale now, since M4's been out for a while.  No reason you can't make your own, though.  It's time consuming work but satisfying in the end.

If you want to make your textures as good as the bought ones, consider a subscription to 3d.sk, which has an enormous collection of photographs for use in texture making.

Needless to say, options 1 and 2 need a graphics app such as Photoshop, PaintShop Pro or Gimp.  And, of course, a good deal of skill and patience.

I have never attempted creating my own. I don't think I actually am a good enough artist for that. I did check out a couple of tutorials today, it looked pretty tough. I have gimp and a cheap old tablet so not sure how feasible it is. It might be easier since I don't care if the skin is super realistic?

I went through something like 800 pages of the free stuff here and did find lots of goodies for V3 and V4. Huge thank yous to all the freebie folks out there, my runtime would be empty without ya!! Not a whole lot for M3 on either here or sharecg but maybe I need to change what I put in the search engine. For RMP I had a bit better luck by using 'for M3' rather than just Michael 3 or M3. I don't mind buying a few things for M3 (I just never did get around to it, what I did spend I spent on pretties for V3, lol) but the less I spend now the sooner I'll have the morphs++ for M4. There are so many cool looking characters in the shops for him now.

Poser 7 can use shaders so I was sort of hoping that might be some sort of option but so far searching for skin shaders has turned up nada. I found one packet of skin shaders for Cararra on daz3d - I don't know if those are useful for poser or not? My understanding of shaders is nil so far since I haven't really had poser 7 very long so maybe it doesn't work that way...

If you're not so bothered about realism, you could colour a square a sort of pale peach -or whatever basic skin tone you need and add a bit of noise.  Drop that onto M3, and use BB's VSS or Snarly's EZSkin shaders to give it some welly.

In freestuff there are some m3 characters. I dont search , but use the selectors for poser, M3- michael 3, characters  and got 4 pages. There is an aragorn and a few others that might be worth a look.

If you dont need realism and are not doing nude figures just pick a skin tone for the diffuse color.

Hiro 3 textures also work on M3.

Check out Rhys for M3 at RuntimeDNA.

Illusions Designs has Brian, Cole and Julian - all excellent.

RenderCandy has Nassir for Hiro 3.

Poserworld has Josiah for M3 (subscription site).

MostDigitalCreations has Ethan for M3

In my freestuff there is a skin palette of tiling textures that can be used as a starting point.

Poser 11 Pro, Windows 10

Auxiliary Apps: Blender 2.79, Vue Complete 2016, Genetica 4 Pro, Gliftex 11 Pro, CorelDraw Suite X6, Comic Life 2, Project Dogwaffle Howler 8, Stitch Witch

Thanks everyone for the replies, I'm getting an education here.

SamTherapy wrote - Snarly's is for Poser 9 and up, not sure about VSS. I wonder if there is a way to do something similiar with Poser 7.

markschum - I'll try searching that way, thanks! I'll also try using a skin tone with the diffuse setting. I think I saw a tutorial the other day for something like that when I was going through the tutorial archives. As far as skin tones, what I am hoping for is just to make a decent skin that doesn't have to look real but also doesn't look like a shiny plastic doll

NanetteTredoux - thanks for those suggestions, I had a look at them - very nice and the price is certainly right. And thanks for the heads up about your tiling textures, I'll snag them today and see what I can play around and come up with.

I've always respected the talent of the artists that make goodies for Poser, but delving into all this has made that shoot up several levels. I feel bad that I make use of other's freebies and never have one to offer. Maybe I can make something after a lot of practice that some one else could actually use. (it could happen - maybe!) I got my funky old aiptek tablet set up last night and it still works so miracles really do occur! (I did notice it needs a bit more electrical tape its - coming apart again, lol)
