Have fun with it Tara, I know this will be a challenge for me - not my forte!

auntietk posted Thu, 31 January 2013 at 6:42 PM

I've done some in the past, but I'll try to get out and do something new for the challenge.  Does your camera have an articulated screen?  That's very helpful for getting candid shots.  If your screen is folded out and your FACE is pointed 90 degrees away from somebody, your lens can be staring right at them and they're unpreturbed.  Of course if you're Andrea, you can get pictures of perfect strangers anywhere you want.  What on earth DOES she say to people to get those shots?  LOL!  I just settle for candids.  :P

blinkings posted Fri, 01 February 2013 at 12:31 AM

Great idea for a challenge Clive. I've never been a fan of photographers who hide their intentions by looking the other way/tilting their screens whilst shooting people without their knowledge. (A) people are not silly and can tell exactly what you are doing, and (B) it's infringing on their privacy IMHO. When I shoot street scenes, I always speak to the person after I shoot the photo, or at the very least stand in plain site to let them know of my basic intentions. It gives subjects the chance to say 'Hey I don't want to be photographed', in which case I will gladly erase the photo. As a man, shooting people up close without their knowledge is a sure way to risk getting arrested for being a pervert..........

cfulton posted Fri, 01 February 2013 at 12:37 AM

Thanks for all the input!

As I said, this is going to be a challenge for me, though I did do some street scenes in while in London.  I will have to get over reservations and shoot local this time!

Great Challenge this month as the Chinese New Celebrations are kicking into gear here in the city. A few small street fairs the next 3 weeks or so.

This was taken a couple of months back at an opening ceremony at San Francisco's Union Square.

Here are two pictures I took in September in an open air museum, where everything was reconstructed of what life was like in Limburg in the years around 1930, last century. On this first you see the seller of an old fashioned candy store, she enjoys watching all visitors.

Oh, and I forgot to describe about that lady in the yellow shirt. She was 'jumping' on the music, had a lollipop in her mouth, and her sunglasses folded up; so funny.
Later, she went while dancing and swaying hips away; from which I also took a picture of.
The photos are not very good, because then I had my camera in repair and used an old.

Great images, everybody!  Wow.

@ Carin - What a great image!  I like it for the same reasons you do, I think.  Wonderful colors.

@ Bill - I love your beachcomber!  I saw him, but never turned my attention in his direction for some reason.  You've shown me something I barely noticed, and I was right there!  :)

@ Helle - Noa is growing up so fast, and she's such a lovely girl.  You must enjoy her so much!  What a wonderful portrait this is!

@ Christo - I love those two shots.  How nice to have such photogenic people asking to have their pictures taken!  :)  They look relaxed and happy, which makes for a great picture.

@ Jacomina - That looks like a fun place!  I like the dancers, but the first one has such a wonderful perspective that it's hard to stop looking at it!  :)

@ Costa - OMG!  That's a crowd!  What a great shot.  I love the framing with the lanterns at the top and the buildings along the sides.  Nice!!

@ Clive - Thanks for the challenge ... this is a good one.  :D

This is a common sight in our cities in South Africa – vendors at the traffic lights walking between the cars selling their wares.  This guy was selling vehicle related goods: mobile charger cables, windscreen sun screens, licence disk holders and sunglasses.

Thank you for all of the visions of people from around the world!  I am enjoying this snapshot of the world we live in.

This picture has the title: Smiling eyes!

These two specialists were working together on our fraternity house working day last summer.

They are two of our freshmen or as we call them: "foxes".

A fox is always naughty, lazy and hungry  -  LOL!

As you can see they had a lot of fun.

Title: Cute CCCP.

This young fraternity brother is Russian and he is really one of the nicest fellows we have
... and he likes very much to pose!

Here he tries to convince everybody that he is the bad, bad soldier
but really anybody who knows him believes this. LOL!

Here I changed the values because this pose looks much stronger
in black and white with this hard contrast!

Hi there friends,

Recently I enjoyed seeing many of your surprising photo's very much.

I guess you took the shot of your beautiful grandson in your studio-gallery, Helle.
As I see lovely paintings on the wall too (that blue one is very fine for me :))

The photos of Clive with also much to see of the landscape, and so special for me to know how things are in South Africa. So it's an interesting story for me too!
All is very different from where I live.

I love the colorful pictures such as from Pete (AZBO) and Barnie!

And, "Scruffy", you really are (looking) impressive, with 'fire' in your eyes :D!

Oh, and not to forget Costa, here! Your last upload is with so much passion, a great attitude!

btw, I read somewhere that Azbo is Pete, excuse me if I'm wrong.

bernieloehn posted Fri, 15 February 2013 at 4:57 AM

Oh, sorry to everybody!

I have just realized that reading helps!

I was only allowed to publish 2 pictures per week and now I have published already 3.

Was that a former rule: All together 3 pictures per challenge here?

I have been so excited on all the pictures that I have been too fast.

Sorry again for this!

Two photos taken in our little village with carnivals.

Here the band that stood for the local pub.

They are dressed in Scottish skirt, but we have a resident here,
which really is a Scotsman, and which last year was Prince Carnival.

Please have look @ this. I've tried it out and it works nearly perfect!

Out of 10 totally strange people about 8 allowed me to shoot a portait picture.

One reason is possibly that I always only use a rather smal digital camera: Pentax Optio RZ10 (sorry links to a German website but you could check the data).

This is our youngest grandson Iddo. He will be 11 in may. He is just as gentle as his older brother Sagi. He adores his older brother, so he was glued to Sagi for a long time, when he came home.

Our dog Magnus adores Iddo, because he always were very gentle to Magnus. Since Iddo was very little he could sit with Magnus for a long time and just pet him. YOu can se it on the link above :)

Again, thanks Clive for this great challenge this month.

Shot at the Rath-Yatra Festival which is now in its 40th year. I've been attending this festival for the last 3 years. This is where  I feel the most comfortable taking candid shots of people.

There is nothing like weaving in out of about 1500-2000 people for about 3-4 ours as they pull these 3 massive chariots through Golden Gate Park. Singing, Drumming and Chanting Hara Krisna which such devotion and frenzy all mixed into one.

PS not obligated to watch...:)

Thanks Clive. I really do appreciate that. Once again thank you for this months challenge.

My last photo for this months challenge. A Tibetan Protest at the United Nations building.

Not only great oppurtinity to shoot candid shots but a great why to get some excerise as well. Most of these start at the United Nations building and then wind their way through the streets of San Franciso and lasting several hours. I wish I had followed this one in particular as it ended up in front of the Chinese consultant.

If I know of a protest I usually get there about an hour or 2 before to watch the set  up and watch as the crowds arrive.

The one I've attached was taken 2 years ago at the Arab Spring uprising. Now in the history books. No obligation to watch.
