The new character for Kate is based on a fictional character in Afrikaans literature: Saartjie Baumann. Many Saartjie books was written by Bettie Naude, and many Afrikaans girls since the late 1950's go through a stage where they read all the books. They are similar in theme to Enid Blyton's "Famous Five" and "Secret Seven" books - wholesome and humourous adventure stories. They were important in encouraging children to read.

Saartjie's appearance is described in detail in the books and I am trying to be faithful to it, hence the bright blue eyes and freckles across the bridge of the nose. I have done a lot of work on the face morph, but I still need to make dimples in the cheeks - that will require a special smile morph. She also needs a distinctive hairstyle and the clothes she is described as wearing in the books - so Kate will get some new outfits from me too.
