Banks is, IMO, single handedly responsible for giving SF - and novels in general - a much needed kick up the backside.  Not only that, he's a first class guy, too.

If there was a list of "Least deserving of this crap", Iain would be one of the front runners.

There's a guestbook for well-wishers to leave comments, should you be so inclined.

Tragic news.

Once I got into "The Culture" series, all other SF seemed a bit lame.

His mainstream novels are also excellent. Easily my favourite author.

Gutted.

I was just reading that on the BBC website and it is a great shock.

I've bumped into him a few times; it's a terrible cliche to say that he's a thoroughly nice guy (but true). On those few occasions, I found him easy and engaging to talk to and much more generous than he needed to be with his time. Devastating news that he seems to have so little of it left.

Just saw this news. Awful.

There is no other author whose writing has embedded itself so profoundly in my imagination.

That's very sad! I wish he and his family the best

BTW: I read quite a few books by Mr. Banks. Great author.
