I painted a bump/spec map that Id like to use for a layer mask but do not know how to paste it into the layer mask of an existing layer. Is this even posible?

Yes, just make sure that the mask is highlighted - click on its little thumbnail in the Layers pane and all operations will apply to the mask, not the layer contents.

yeah, I tried that . it only makes a new layer. Is it a different command other than Paste? I also tried the options in the Paste Special menue (PSCS 5.5 extended). I am being mindful of weather or not the mask layer is highlighted so that isnt the issue. It's so weird.

WOW photoshop is retarded!! Had to do a search on the internet. You have to paste it in the layer channels tab with the layer mask visible. Totaly un-intuitive.
