If I have to create that mesh I will, but I was hoping there was a way around it.
For the record, I am NOT making a Green Lantern, only trying to use that aura effect on another character.

Is there any reason you can't use an image editor for this ? Cause it's real easy to do there and looks much nicer besides...

Yeah, I could, but I want to be able to do it in Poser. As I stated above, I know one way to do it, I was just wondering if there were other ways to get it done.

just thinking out loud, Ambient produces an even surface lighting, and Diffuse produces brigtness in the middle and darness at the sides, so Ambient minus Diffuse might be something in the right direction.

I don't think you can solve this with shading alone since shading only applies where there is a mesh. The bright outline in the mesh could possibly be done with an edge blend but the glow going beyond the mesh needs to be done either at a 2D level (in post) or else you have to provide a mesh to support it.
Maybe the art lens method of BB would work though i'm not sure how you would do the blur.

"I know this effect can be done in Poser..."
Oh, yeah; I'd bet money that it can be done.
Creating a poseable surrounding aura is not a trivial task; Rokket wisely realizes this.
An alternative -which I have not tried- would be to use a duplicate doll parented/conformed to the main doll. Set materials for things like inner mouth, etc. to be invisible. For the outer surface (exposed skin, clothes, hair), try adding a constant* and fairly large displacement (this gives you an envelope) and use the ambient edge blend as the texture. Worth a try.
* If the outfit is a "second skin" displacement & texture applied to the doll's skin, then just add the second skin displacement to the constant displacement.

I was thinking what ironsoul did - edge blend ;).

Agreed, as long as you don't require that the glow extend outside of the doll's silhouette, ironsoul's idea is simple and elegant.

Would it also be possible to make the figures Emitters and use Atmosphere?

Well enabling IDL would turn them into emitters just by adding the ambient edge blend, and yes, if you can tolerate the render time hit, you can add some atmosphere to possibly get the glow around them, or at least, one would think.

Upon experimenting, I'm not so sure it would work now, not getting results I thought.
But in postwork, you could easily do it.

I like where this is headed. Both Bionic Rooster and ironsoul gave me some really good points to start.
And seachnasaigh, your idea of the doll parented to the figure might work too. What I was thinking was to increase the scale, but with your double edge node technique, you probably don't have to.
Time to do some tinkering.

I wanted to avoid doing it post because it doesn't look right when they have a prop in their hand, or are touching a prop or another figure in the scene. It makes it hard to get it right. Making a 2D glow on a 3D object and getting it to look like it was supposed to be there is a lot of work. I am sure the long render time vs what I would have to do in postwork is a pretty good trade off.

On Ironsoul's example set Transparency_Edge to 1 and Transparency_falloff to .5 or something and you get a cool x-ray effect.

I don't know if you are trying to avoid post work for the challenge or to keep the process simple... But if you want the aura to extend beyond the filter, I have created a few filter setups for virtualdub to do bloom.
The idea is that you need to keep the aura brighter that anything else in the scene (or those things will glow also). First you load the image in and crank the contrast up until only your aura remains visible against a black background. It appears I used the threshold filter to do this. Then you apply a gaussian blur, and use filterblender to add the aura to the original image.
Attached is the setup of one that worked well for putting an aura around an overhead lightglobe. Not sure if that one adds chroma or just luma, but it shows how the process works.

displacement - nope
Displacment edge blend - ugh
hair - stupid idea
hair edge blend - even more stupid idea
dof - dissapointed
beer - hmm
more beer - starting to look good.
even more beer - yep that worked.

Yeah, it looks like I am going to have to model a mesh around the figure and use the double edge blend technique. Most of the attempts I made at it resulted in the figure looking like they were bathed in harsh light.
No shortcuts here. Dang it.

Anyhow, I am getting closer to achieving my goal.
This was done by dupicating Ryan and using the dupe to create the glow. Edge blend with displacement. I used the normal diffuse and specular channel instead of the ambient.
I am getting there.
