Hi, I made my comics to be print size, then using photoshop batch script I resized them all.  Now each comic page is 173-258KB size.  Is that still too big for putting into slideshows to display my comic do you think?

PS I'm going to use adobe muse for making the website. it doesn't resize the pics automatically I don't think. If i try larger images it always complains about the picture.

The current image size in your comics is 449px × 635px (a bit small). You know is PS you can "compress by size", keeping the original image size but making the file size smaller. There's a payoff in quality but it might be worth experimenting.

PS I love your comics.

thanks.  well actually I am redoing my website (was iweb) in adobe muse, so what you saw of it isn't how it will look.  the images will be larger.

This is the sample website - how I think I will do it.  Could you have a quick look and tell me if it loads okay and if the image sizes look bigger in this one.

I would really appreciate some help as I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to websites.

you need to look at what bandwidth your viewers are likely to have.

a 280 kb picture will take about 40 seconds on a 56k dialup and 8 seconds on a 256k dsl line.

The  other issue is how much data transfer does your host allow each month ?  you can do a rough calculation to see how many page views that would be.

With jpeg you might get better compression for negligable image loss although this is a matter of opinion on whats acceptable.

A page of your web comic angie1.jpg saved for web from photoshop changed from 280k to 96k and to me looked fine.

That's looks really good Esther. Everything works fine for me (Firefox) and the image sizes are fine on my monitor (1920x1080). Can't help with websites I'm afraid.

#6 Crash only has one picture? it doesn't seem to be linking to any others.

estherau posted Sat, 03 August 2013 at 11:39 PM

oops must have forgotten to  link that one.  thanks.  I'm glad it works okay ashley9803.

well I could shrink the pics down even more I suppose.  Is that what you advise Markschum?  What is the downside of doing it if it looks okay to you shrunkdown, then is there any potential downside to shrinking more?

Ashley, do you like the old iweb website best or my new website (not quite finished as yet)?

The new one is much better IMO.

The down-side of reducing file size is you lose image quality, but as mentioned by markschum you can reduce file size significantly without noticeable quality loss. You need to reach a compromise between the two by trial and error.

estherau posted Sun, 04 August 2013 at 12:25 AM

Thanks for that. I'm scared to reduce too much in case it looks different on my screen and and I don't notice the loss of quality but I will try and get it down more.

Glad you like the new site. I might switch over to it soon then.  I just need to get the email links and sign up forms working if possible.

I don't know what I've done but the pictures look much worse now, and yet episode 2 takes a long time to load (unless I had episode cached somehow before)

what do you think?

I'm making them more or less 170kb but some will be a bit higher and some will be lower.  so anyway don't look yet as I'm reloading the site.  Should be done in an hour or so.

I think I'm very close to being able to go live with my website.  Maybe this coming weekend I can upload it to my pacefiction site if I don't run out of internet.
