I may just be having a frozen mind but it there a way to select all objs that are similar?

Like a cube or what? If you need to select objects that are same, look at the bottom of the screen.  See the picture. If not, then ignore the advice and be more specific about the type of objects that you're referring to...

 

Tip: At the beginning of creating, I always create a family grouping so should I want to change a particular group of objects mats, I just click on the famly's color.
