We have come to an issue in preparing a section of the new FAQ and I need a Mac user to clarify this...

When moving a runtime from an unpacking folder to a runtime folder, Does the MAC OS prompt the user to merge, overwrite, (anything) the new runtime folder with the old one?

On a Windows box, the OS asks if you want to merge the new folder with the old one of the same name. This is what we want. Is this the case with a MAC? If not, what messages do you get and what are the right answers to give?

Any help appreciated.

No, there is no such feature on the Mac. If you drop a folder to a place where there is a folder with the same name you will be prompted if you want to overwrite the folder.

To merge two folders together you need to use the DittoGUI application: http://www.ilike.co.nz/SoftwareDev/dittoGUI.html

Hope this helps.

To be complete, the "ditto" command does the job of merging and it's part of the OS. Unfortunately it's a command-line application and many people would be intimidated by it. Hence the need for the DittoGUI frontend.

Cheers.

Not to ask for too much of your time... but...

Could you write me a paragraph or two about this to go in the FAQ so I don't give the Mac users a bum steer? Just a 1-2-3 list of the steps to go through and the commands to use.

(I don't have access to a Mac and therefore must depend on other users like you to insure my accuracy.)

No problem, I will.

Let me know the format that you can use.

Can I use images or it has to be pure text?

A Rich Text file or html would be easieest, but I'm the one asking for the favor. As long as I can open it on a windows computer. Imbedded images are fine if you need them for clarity. I've sent you my actual email at sitemail here. Thanks in advance.

Not wishing to hijack the thread but just to provide other options:-

Use it/don't use it.
Refer to it/don't refer to it.

Whatever is your pleasure.

That looks great Phil. Thank you for sharing it, I was not aware of this program.

Cheers.

I've just been using Smith Micro's free Stuffit Expander utility to unzip... it handles the merging, which OS X does not do natively.

Works fine when the zip is properly compiled... i.e. runtime (and any docs) folder at the root.

With some zips, e.g. the new Daz zip format, this isn't the case... so I got the more fully featured Stuffit Archive Manager, which allows separate extraction of sub folders within a zip archive.

I use that ditto utility all the time for installing my stuff and mergin my folders.

This merging is perhaps the biggest difference when using PC compared to mac.

apart from that everything else in poser works pretty much the same.
