Easy question, is DAZ blowing sales of content to carraraests because they don't have said content listed as carrara compatable?
Now with C8.5 carrara should be able to use any Studio compatable content. Yes they may need some texture tweakage or lighting adjusting, but if they load and function with no other issues, shouldn't they be listed as carrara compatable? Possably with a * to show that some tweakage may be nessary.
From a new users prospective you would think DAZ supports carrara only in a minor way based on content listed as compatable. This may also dicourage new carraraests from using carrara at all. I mean why use carrara when it seems very little is actually compatable.
Carrara compatablity is the second most asked question on the DAZ carrara forum; number one being "where's my content" usually followed buy "I used DIM" and "it's not showing in my smart content browser"; a misnomer if there ever was one.

Yes, I have been saying this for awhile.
The only question I have is does Daz have Genesis working properly in C8.5 yet? If not, it might cause more confusion than anything.
That said, there is a wealth of items, pre-genesis, that work perfectly fine in Carrara (as you said, with tweaking, ) so this has been a problem for awhile.

I dought genesis will ever work better in carrara then it does now. I dought auto fit will ether.
At least in C8.5. I'm of the opinion all develiopment of C8.5; what little was going on, ended when it was released, so there wont be a bug fix update. I mean we already know DAZ devs were working on C9 long before C8.5 was released; and in my opinon why it took so long.
None the less the big new feature in C8.5 was .duf compatability. And for what testing I did; I quit shoping at DAZ ages ago, most .duf files opend fine. But if DAZ has so little faith that new content wont work in carrara, why should a shopper?
When DAZ first bought Carrara at C5.5, they said most all poser content then carried would work in carrara. The figures did, mil2 clothes worked fine, mil3 was hit or miss; more often miss. I had to retuned the first 5 articals of clothing I bought from DAZ becaught they didn't work in C5.5 at all.
I later rebaught the clothes; after C6, because I really wanted the clothing working not the money back.
If DAZ had offered C8.5 at a reasonable price I would have it now and be using it regarless of how well genesis or autofit worked, because of the other options that work fairly well and I got used to using; like soft cloth draping for stills.
The ability to drape practically any clothes in a still scene was a big help to making a more realistic scene.
But back to the topic at hand. I think DAZ is lossing a lot of sales to carraraests, especially new ones, by not listing content that is pretty well compatable with carrara as carrara compatable. I mean with the new .duf format carrara can use content for Studio 4 as well as it ever could any poser content.
Yes shaders will need tweaking; no biggy and Fenric's{?} plugins make it a breeze, from what I read. Lights will need work; still quite easily done. But for how many carraraest is this not SOP for any scene?
To surmize lol
It's my opinion DAZ is losing sales of content to carraraests simply because they don't have them listed as compatable. Most DAZ content comes in .duf, the main feature in C8.5 is .duf compatability. To hear DAZ tell it the reason C8.5 took so long was because .duf was an unfinished file format, so as it was updated the beta had to be updated. It's done now; maybe, so most all of the new content at DAZ should be quite reasonably compatable.

Just a note:Fenric's plugins for shaders work great! Especially Shader Doctor with the new included Skin Doctor. I love that plugin.

Here we go again, Was anyone aware that G2M came out a couple of days ago? No word of it here, or any other CG forum with a carrara section. Not even the carraracafe.
DAZ is aware that in order to sell a product they need to get the word out right? And I don't mean just in sales flyers to existing customers; which usually go right inthe spam folder.
Once again I will climb up on my personal soap box to expound on how bad DAZ screwed up banning me, and over pricing C8.5. When Dawn was released and I was still using the C8.5 beta I ran around and showed her off in 5 different forums. If I had C8.5 and G2M I would have done the same. I like working with the new toys and showing what I have done.
Marketing used to be the strongest dept at DAZ, now though, not so much.

Do you think the REAL reason is Mike6 seems to be having the traditional autofit problems of the other Genesis characters?
In that thread you posted, people are having trouble fitting clothes to M6 & older Genesis 1 clothes seem to be having even more problems.
Maybe the few dollars they COULD make off us wouldn't be worth the refunds and customer demands (reasonable though they would be) that the software be fixed.

Good point. If a company has a car that is a known lemon they don't put them right out front on the lot.

The price of Carrara Pro, in a blow-out sales, shouldn't be more than $49.- Here are the justifications:
1. Cheetah3D (link) is priced at $99.- and occasionaly at $69.- At this price it has better features than Carrara. If you look a their News page, you will see that every new release, major or minor, came with some significant new features or enhancements, unlike Carrara which is starting to look like a dusty relic.
2. Realsoft (link), which, quite like Carrara, is a bit of a dying product because it had no major releases since 2010, is a feature packed 3D app, almost at the same level as 3DS Max. Yet it is currently priced at 150 euros, for a competitive upgrade.
When I look at these 2 apps and all the features they offer for their low prices, I don't think Carrara Pro is worth more than $49.-

dr_bernie...
I'm surprised you didn't mention the 800lbs Gorilla sitting in the room which the other 3D software makers should worry about. Blender isn't that bad right now (I find it reasonably usable despite it's reputation and my own failure to get anywhere with older versions) and it costs $0.00. With a few more features tacked on, and a bit more polish, even the likes of C4D or 3DS/Maya might have to worry.
Only thing Blender misses vs. Carrara are some presets, add-on content libraries, and quick loading of DAZ3D or Poser figures. Some of the other aspects in terms of producing FX, rigging, material setup, Python plugins/add-ons, or render settings are already (don't want to say it here, but being honest) better.
I even made a video comparing the two. I think there are some other Carrara users more apt to make a proper comparison with Blender, yet my video may give some users an idea of how to do the same things with both software if they want to give it a try.

The way it stands now, I'm considering a go at Blender again. I'm just sick of getting the dirty end of the DAZ stick.
booksbydavid posted Wed, 01 January 2014 at 1:48 PM
I keep going back and forth over Blender. As long as my copy of Carrara works on my machine, I'll keep using it, but eventually I'll need a replacement. I'd rather it be a version of Carrara, but if DAZ can't get its head out Blender might be the alternative. I'll have to watch pauljs75's video and check out the comparison just for grins.

I played with Blender a long while back, but it just didn't stack up to Carrara for my needs.
I have C4D and the learning curve is STEEP.
I can get more done in Carrara with less fuss, so as long as I can keep getting content and C7Pro keeps treating me right, I'll stick with Carrara.

carrara is like old socks - smelly, faded, full of holes, but it feels comfortably familiar :)

I think I'm done.
DAZ is making so much off the backs of the PAs they will never notice if all of us carraraest quit DAZ. Certainly not going to miss me. I may have spent a fair chunk of my income at DAZ over the years, but to DAZ what is a fair chunk of my income, will never be missed.
Just sick of trying to deal with a company that does not care to make a quality product.

Well, for any Carrara users that can make Genesis work and get the clothes to fit, the FastGrab has abunch of Genesis bundles 70% off.
I won't post a link, because it upsets some people when I do.
If Daz got it's act together and made Genesis work, I would be all over this.

Yeah, I hear you.
Despite my misgivings about Genesis, I really DO wish it worked properly in Carrara. I like the way V5 and V6 look.
DS doesn't fit into my workflow, so...
Oh well.
Maybe Vanna will have a wardrobe malfunction.

Well, I've got plenty of consonants, but I don't like to talk about them. It's kind of embarassing.

Genesis works for me on Carrara, but my main app for that platform is DAZ Studio, so I was all over that, over multiple purchases during the sale. On some I used the extra $6 coupon and made out with far greater than 70% off.
I especially went for the fibermesh hair, they look great in toon renders I am working on (after I remove the map from the opacity channel).
Genesis needs to handle poke through in Carrara just as well as it does in DAZ Studio. That's my only gripe at the moment. But I am sure there will be a few more as I work with it in Carrara more.
Oh, and Carrara's content browser needs a new design, like a few years back! What a pain in the ass.
