When I asked if DAZ3D was out to kill Poser, this is what I got:

David Sandberg, Nov 14 07:43 (MST):

Hi Gordon,

Thanks for the questions...

======================================
"That which is DAZ Studio only could also be made available in Poser. That which has been released for DAZ Studio only can be retrofit to Poser. Since I have a decade long runtime of Poser, it is impossible to move to DAZ Studio (682 GB, 2,378,000 files)"

♦ 682GB--Wow! That is a lot of Poser content you have. If you ever wanted to, I believe you can access your Poser library from within DAZ Studio. You would simply need to add it as a Runtime in DAZ Studio's Content Directory Manager. Here are the steps...

HOW TO MAP A FOLDER IN DAZ STUDIO'S CONTENT DIRECTORY MANAGER

  1. Identify the folder you'd like to map as a content directory. The folder you select should enclose the Runtime folder of your content directory.
  2. From the menubar in DAZ Studio, pull down: EDIT (DAZStudio on the Mac) --> Preferences --> Content Library --> Content Directory Manager
  3. Expand all the directories by clicking on the white triangles
  4. Click on "DAZ Studio Formats"
  5. Click "Add", navigate to the directory from step 1
  6. Click on "Poser Formats"
  7. Click "Add", navigate to the same directory in step 1
  8. Click "Accept" button on "Content Directory Manager"
  9. Click "Accept" button on "Preferences" window
  10. Quit and Restart DAZ Studio

"I like the Product Library feature which allows me to replace shot up files over a decade of crashes and glitches.Since the structure of my libaries and textures are built around other variables, the automatic download cannot be superimposed over the present structure wihout hunt and move."

♦ I'm not sure of the specifics of how you have organized your library, but you can choose where DAZ Install Manager installs products to...

By default DAZ Install Manager uses a distinct default install path (/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library), different from the usual "My Library" that you are used to. It does this so there is not any confusion for both it (DAZ Install Manager) or you about what it has installed and what it has not installed. It cannot manage content that you have installed manually.

Although it is not recommended to change the default install path, nonetheless you can set the install path to whatever you choose:

  1. launch install manager and sign in
  2. click the gear at the upper right of window
  3. click to "installation" tab
  4. press "+" button at bottom of settings window
  5. assign a label for the location
  6. press the "..." button and navigate to the folder of your choice and click "select folder" button
  7. in the drop down button labeled "Install to", select your folder
  8. click "accept"

Now products will be installed to your newly chosen folder

The dearth of new products for Poser is suggestive of a program to ruin Poser for the Poserites, except that the blowback potential on DAZ3D may be either destructive or instructive. I prefer to keep buying Poser products from DAZ 3D so long as there are any I haven't bought already

♦ We leave it up to each individual artist to decide whether to release a product for Poser, DAZ Studio, or both. Many products that are developed mainlly for DAZ Studio can be opened in Poser using the DSON Importer product...

DAZ3D built the Poser market based on high quality figures. Given the expansion of the base of Poser oriented providers who may distend the market for CG products, leading to an uncertain future for any given sector.

Most of my evolving needs for Poser product still rely on Gen4 figures. I have been retrofitting the older figures as low poly substitutes for more distant shots.

♦ I'm glad you are able to find a way to deal with the situation.

I hope this answers your questions? If not, simply re-state your question and I'd be happy to continue assiting...

Thanks,

David
