I was inspired by the news of the Batman vs Superman movie talk. They are keeping a pretty tight lid on the new Batman costume. The web is full of fakes, so I thought I would see what I could come up with.

I still have to UV map a lot of the parts and finalze the textures; I have a few issues to fix, but overall, this is probably my best modeling to date.

Would you want this if I offered it up in the freestuff? Can I even put it in there, or does it violate some sort of copyright?

I got it UV mapped, so I will be spending the next few days creating texture maps and seeing what I can do to make it really pop.

Thanks for the kind words!

You can offer it freely as long as you don't call it Batman.  Conceptually, I don't think it is in any violation.

Beautiful job.

Yeah, I was going to call it 'Hero Suit for Tyler' anyhow.

If you think he looks good now, wait until you see the finished product. I am going to rig it, and since you have a DC character of your own, I would like to see them together in a render. Give me about another week or so and it should be uploaded and ready to fly.

I seem to have found my niche. I've tried modeling motorcycles, arctic snow cats, massage tables... all a success, but doing these costumes gives me a lot of pleasure.

If I can pull this off, I may try the new Man of Steel costume next. That one seems to be pretty straight forward at first glance. But if you dig deep, there is A LOT going on with that suit.

Maybe I'll wait until the pics of the new suit come out and try that.

I would like to see conceptual costumes for the Legion of Superheroes, breaking away from the comic book silver age traditionals.  Especially since current action movies are redesigning costumes with real world appearance.  Just a nudge to your creative juices.

Everything is UV mapped, and this is the initial materials. I am not happy with a couple of them, specifically the symbol and the cape, so I am rethinking those. I am putting this out there for opinions. What would you change? I liked the original enough, but it looked a little plastic for me.

rokket posted Tue, 31 December 2013 at 4:26 AM

A side-by-side comparison...

What I really like about the new materials are the gloves. I managed to pull off a great white shark body appearance by both modeling the seam in there and the UV map.

I am not a merchant. I will end up putting this in the freestuff section as a fully rigged conforming costume. I was doing it as a concept on the new Batman suit for the next Man of Steel movie.

I am going to do some touch-up work on the boots and redo the symbol and the cape textures.

Perhaps it's tume to become one and get a little in return for all of your hard work ;-) I'm not saying you should ask a fortune for it, just a little in return. There are a few stores around that allow you to set your own price and sell for a small amount everyone can afford and will give you some money in return to buy some stuff you would like.

I used the morphs that Tyler came with (basically they are Ryan 2's morphs) to beef him up, but I still wanted him to look a bit more realistic in body proportions. I will include details on which morphs to dial up when I package this.

I think I have achieved what I am going to use as the final textures. I'll post that next. Thanks for your kind words!

The final textures.

Next I am going to fix a couple issues I discovered in the body suit's mesh and in the gloves. I am going to fix the eyebrows of the cowl and move the eyes down to cover Tyler's eyebrows, and then start rigging.

I think for the rigging, I am going to follow suit (no pun intended) with what I did for Miki 4's armor, and rig the suit as much as I can as a single unit.

rokket posted Wed, 01 January 2014 at 4:16 AM

I fixed the asymmetry in the thigh armor and added some detail to the boots. I am going to fix a poke through issue on the suit and the gloves, then I start rigging.

The next render I post will be the rigged suit.

Are there any tutorials about rigging a cape? I am thinking I will just leave this as a dynamic cloth for now.

I think I may have that one. I'll have to check and see. I have a lot of DC and Marvel animated movies.

When I started this out, I was going for a look between David Finch's Batman The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Arkham Origins video game. I changed some of the textures around to give it my own twist. The costume in the pic is pretty damn good, though. I would have copied it, but I couldn't do a cowl and cape as one piece without bad things happening to the mesh...

I also have a funny feeling that the bat suit for the new movie will look a lot like the one in this post. It's the Batman from Arkham Origins.

It'a not a film. It's a game. Blur Studios (I think it was Blur) did an animated intro for the game (as well as for DC Universe Online - you should see the trailers for that one) hat really would justify a full length movie being made but nothing ever came of it. They do have an ongoing series I believe that takes place within the game's alternate universe.

I was not a fan of Bat's look in that game at all.

There was an animated film about the Justice League fighting the Injustice Gang, called "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths" but that has nothing to do with "Injustice: Gods Among Us" beyond the fact that it's an alternate universe where some of the Justice League members have gone bad (in Crisis on Two Earths, the entire Justice League are villains).

Teyon posted Fri, 03 January 2014 at 1:34 PM

Also, Bill Finger had just as much, if not more, influence on the creation of Batman (back in the days of him carrying a gun) and never gets mentioned. Kind of sad.

EClark1894 posted Fri, 03 January 2014 at 1:52 PM

Yeah, I figured it had something to do with a game. You could tell in the fight sequences. Still wasn't bad though, and you can find the "movie" on Youtube.

I am working on the Flash right now, using Ryan. I won't do the Martian Manhunter, but I am going to do a Green Lantern and MAYBE the Man of Steel. Then I will offer them as a set in the Freestuff section, maybe minus the logos (but there may be an Easter egg with them hidden in the files somewhere). All in time...

Well, I ran into two snags in less than 10 minutes so I am on a short break until I can get over getting mad at myself for letting these mistakes get past me.

Mistake number one is kind of forgivable because it was small and can be missed. There were two vertices that were subsurface on the Batman suit that made it go haywire when I moved the shoulders in any direction. So I have to take the suit back into Wings and correct that.

The other mistake was a little more noticeable, and I NEVER should have let that one happen. I modeled the entire Flash costume on an exported Ryan figure that wasn't zeroed out.

Batman is an easy fix and will be done later today. But I am still PO'd about the Ryan mistake, so I will probably do a restart on that one tomorrow.

Edit: I don't have to remodel the boots or gloves, and I hadn't done the cowl, so it's just the suit itself that needs to be redone.

I am hearing that Ryan Reynolds is not interested in reviving his Hal Jordon character, so there is a rumor that Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson could be playing John Stewart, who replaced Hal as the lantern.

So I will have to see before I make that suit.

And that's still on hold until the second week of February anyhow for me. :woot:

Quote - I have GIMP, Blender, Wings 3D, MeshLab, Sculptris, Poser, all just for fun. The problems I am encountering are the exact same problems I had with the Halo suit for Miki, and since it was almost 8 months ago that I did her rigging, I can't remember how to fix what is messed up.

They say dreamers have no use for memory cause there always dreaming of tomorrow.
This wasn't a probleam untill CGI.paint n canvas no memory needed.
Now I make notes or tutorails so I can remember how I did that.
Now if I could only remember where I put those notes.😉

Bingo. They say that when you get old, it affects two things first: your memory.... and I forgot what the other thing was.

One more character to create, then things will get interesting. It might be awhile until I can get that one done, this week will be a busy one.

Oh, and the Green Lantern isn't done. He's still missing his ring and gloves.

Here they are in a Justice League pose of sorts. Still missing one guy. I am still trying to figure out who I am going to use for the Man Of Steel. I don't own anything other than Poser natives and maybe Apolllo, whom I've decided is too hard for me to use.

I will figure it out. Then I will figure out what I want to do with these costumes. Seems a shame to let them go to waste, but I don't know if I want to devote anymore time to them...

Yeah. I am using Ryan and a face morph to see if I can get it done that way. Won't know for awhile. I've never done a successful morph before, so I am hoping I can get it done in the face room. If not, this little venture is over as far as I am concerned.

That would be too bad too, because I put a lot into this. Although I do admit, I am recycling a few parts from Batman to make Superman's costume. His cape and suit, for instance...

I have come across several conceptual emblem considerations for the Man of Steel.  Maybe you might mix it up a bit.

rokket posted Tue, 21 January 2014 at 7:48 AM

Interesting. The one that is on there is just to signify it was the man of steel. I fully intend to model the logo on there.

And that suit is just a starting point. Here is where it is at the moment.

The piping is modeled in there, it's not displacement. That way I can texture it later on.

Are you meshing the emblems into the bodysuit or are you using decals from prior images?  If image decals, I have, in the past, taken those images into a an Illustration application and rework them into a higher resolution for sharpness.

rokket posted Tue, 21 January 2014 at 4:59 PM

I am meshing the emblems into the suit. I did it for all of them so far. I will get a screen cap of the others and post it.

I prefer to model the emblem vs trying to get a decal to fit and look right (see above).

Here are the Batman, Green Lantern and the new Man of Steel emblems side by side.

I switched from Ryan to Tyler and used Fabiana's face morphs and refit one of James' hair pieces. Not too bad, but still not where I want it. The suit is pretty much done, but I am going to detail the piping and still have to model the emblem.

That Brandon Routh suit collar wasn't doing it for me, so I took it off. I detailed the cape a bit and added a temp texture to the suit...

That's all for today. The kids will be home from school in a bit.

I really need to change that hair! OMFG! I got a fresh look at it and it's horrible.

I am off to find something I can replace it with.
