Subject: applying a stncil to a glass texture

I am working on a glass coffe craff and need to apply the gold star stencil to the glass texture.. is there a way to do this.. I have tried a few things, but does not seem to be working.. when I am finished I want it to look like the attached.. Any help would be great.. thank you

Lets see ir I can remember this. Paint your stars on to a black or white background ( I think this wiil be app specific)

Duplicate the layer and change the stars to either black or white (obviously different from the background).

Use the black and white version in the transparency channel of your rendering app and the coloured one in the diffuse channel.

You can do it also with geometry, so long as polygon count isn't a concern.  You can create the star shapes using lines or curves, then convert to geometry, then attach them to the surface of the pot.  Some modeling applications allow you to conform geometry over a surface, which is perfect for doing that.  However, it's probably most efficient and easier to do via materials and textures, as airflames suggests.
