I have a character holding a flashlight in her left hand, and I am wanting to make it look like the flashlight is on, but am not sure how to get the lighting right for it.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Right now, this is the latest solution/suggestion:

I'll be following this and experimenting myself.

Who knows how to save a light with a prop?  I vaguely recall that it can be done.

I'll make a flashlight with a beam (visibility will fade away near the far end of the cone).  The lens will be moderately ambient.  The lighting will need to be from a spotlight set to match the cone angle.

Geometry build screen capture attached - ignore scale;  I'll set that before exporting OBJs.

You can indeed save a light parented to a prop but you have to edit the prop code and add in the light code. I haven't done it in a while but could check my notes for you. Also try a search here with Lesbently as the author of the posts. I believe it was he that showed me how some time back.
