I'm trying to texture these leg warmers and I keep getting that moire pattern. This texture was done with a shader in Poser. Ibriefly toyed with the ide of trying to do it in Blender except I don't have a clue as to how to use Blender's node editor beyond how to open it.

some times a small patterns just messes with the TV , PC and ya get odd patterns from it.

Could be a bad UVMap.

This won't help, but in Bryce there's a feature called "Distance Blur", it's used so that you don't get a flickering effect in the distance on repeating patterns such as this.  I don't know how Poser handles it but it could be that looking in the materials will not give the answer.

If it's anything like Bryce, it's a render thing, not a material thing.

No, I'm just telling you to try changing your texture fitering; is it at Crisp?

  Oh, sorry!

But no, it's a 2D Weave node, so there's no texture filter.

EClark1894 posted Sat, 05 April 2014 at 6:58 PM

Went back into Blender and remapped the warmers. Then I upped the Gain a bit from the default .65 to 1 on the Weave node.

Does look a bit better.

I never knew it had a name "moire"

ya fix stuff like this buy proses of elimination

if it's moire. ya need a bigger pattern.
So ya test with a bigger pattern

if it's texture filtering. the crisp thing.

if it's the map
uv maps texture
If ya put a uvmap texture on ya mesh it will show about the uv map.
all the colored & #'s square's alt to be same size "ALL SAME SIZE"
squares not rectangles but "SQUARES".

I can't map at all not even a cube ,so I cheat ;)

The Weave node is extremely sensible to moiré.
Texture filtering will not help, as it is a procedural shader setup.
Only reducing the number of weaves to just below the moiré limit will solve this.
But?
Moiré is also sensible to distance of view, light and camera angle. There are no simple solutions. Trial and error untill you get out of the moiré zone.

Or? Replace the weave node by a texture.

If it's really just a camera issue then I'm going to leave it alone. However, I may also investigate making a texture for it.

pumeco posted Sun, 06 April 2014 at 4:43 PM

Did you try bumping-up the value of the "Min Shading Rate" control in the Render Options?

Seriously, try it.

Like I said, this is probably a render thing, not a material thing.  It's no different to what happens in the real world when we take a photo with a digital camera.  We get exactly the same moire if we point a digital camera at fine detail like that.

Does that mean real world leggings material has moire just because our camera recorded it?

Of course not, it's still as perfect as ever to our eyes so it means our camera must be to blame, or in your case, your Poser camera which is governed by the render settings.  In Poser, the way to soften the ailiasing filter appears to be to give a higher value to the Shading Rate.  It forces the camera not to be so picky about detail, so that will likely cure the moire.

Higher numbers mean less detail, so surely less moire ;-)

You're legging material is as perfect as you want it to be, you're struggling with it for nothing because that same material will look different in everyones render depending on their Shading Rate.

It's a sensitive setting BTW, so don't go wild with it.

I've got a couple of people in this thread on block, so forgive me if they've already pointed this out.  But given that the issue is happening in the same place all of the time regardless of camera angle or distance, it looks as if the issue might be occuring based on seams and not moire.

@Clarkie**
The reason you're surprised about the distance from the camera effecting the moire is because you've not listened to a word I said.  It's not your materials that's causing the moire, it's the way they're being rendered.

Repeating patterns will always cause moire but it's not the materials fault you see it.  No matter what you do the user is going to have that issue in their render unless they adjust their shading rate to compensate.  To render such things you have to decide on your camera position, then fiddle around with the shading rate until you get a moire free result or something acceptable to you.

But move the camera and it'll need tweaking again.

Regards Joust, I didn't know it was available on anything else, I thought it was strictly one of those cartridge affairs for the Atari console.  But yup, I thought Joust was a seriously addictive game, and even more so in two player mode.

I'm surprised the game controllers never packed up, those sticks used to get some major force on them with that game.  To look at it, a person would never guess how it can be addictive, but playing it is a different matter.

Quote - I think I finally got it right this time.  I abandoned the shader on the legwarmers, but used it on a plane instead. Made the plane a texture, then added that to the leg warmers. No more moire.

Thanks W &W for the tip.

Looks good

Okay, I'm giving up. I hate to do it but I admit defeat. I can't quite figure out how to do a decent tutu for Roxie, so if someone else can do it, go for it. I will release the leotards and leg warmers for both Roxy and Miki 4, but I'm sorry about the tutu. Maybe inspiration will hit me and I'll figure it out, and maybe release it as a freebie for the dance outfit, but for now... I'm done.

I like her better as a street dancer.

Who cares about some out dated 17th century ugly tutu's anyways.

Okay, so I couldn't do the tutu as I wanted, but I was able to do this dynamic wrap skirt for Roxie to wear around her leotard. I still have a bit of refinement to do on it, and then I have to convert it for Miki 4.

pumeco posted Sun, 13 April 2014 at 4:54 AM

That looks really good, Carkie, nice light as well :-)

And I wouldn't take too much notice of Roxie with the blade, it's just the way she is, and between you and me I think she's gagging for that leotard so that she can tease the men (and women) with it!

Plus, I think she misses you as a tailor.  She keeps checking what Clarkie and Vilters are doing to make sure you're not being unfaithful to her.

EClark1894 posted Sun, 13 April 2014 at 5:48 AM

Actually, I have a few clothing items in store for  Roxie and Rex. Here's the dance outfit for Rex I'm finishing up.

That's awesome. And a piece like that would be a great introduction to dynamic clothing for someone who'd never tried it before. The leotard is lovely too. Fits Roxie like a glove.

Well, how many naked girls have you got in your runtime?

Besides, if he normally loads without gens, what do you expect him to do if you add them? There's only there for one reason, right? :D

Yeah, there's lots and lots of naked girls here in the Runtime, but that's not the point!

I mean, I suppose he has his uses, like instant gratification for the women without even having to touch his excitement dial.  But he's like that all the time here in the Runtime, and his room is right next door to mine, it's creepy as hell!!!

Listen, when I first met the dude I thought he was just pleased to see me.  But then I noticed he was still excited while eating his lunch.  I even caught him going through the the Primitives Room here in the Runtime and he was still excited just by looking at the Torus!

I mean, why on earth would the dude be excited by a Torus?
Yeah, never mind, I just realised ... I'll have to hide the Torus from him!!!

You're a brave guy, RorrKonn.  Whenever you see the green coloured text it is "Roxie - Girl With Blade" taking over my account and typing whatever she likes.

Roxie - Girl With Blade, is a deviant Roxie, she has a much darker soul than all the other Roxies and she lives solely in my Runtime.  She wants me to make her famous and distribute her as a character, but she has some hopes considering nothing seems to work!

At the moment she looks pretty much like a vanilla Roxie, and the blade she carries is one she stole from the Poser Runtime.  But if I can get around the issues with Poser, she'll get her very own, very nasty blade - and a whole new look to go with it.

Yeah, listen, like you have a choice?
If Clark can sell this stuff, so can you, and you better if you value your head!!!

Roxie - Girl With Blade

I like Roxie the Ripper better. And you know how women with knives are.

pumeco posted Mon, 14 April 2014 at 8:00 AM

Must admit "Roxie The Ripper" sounds good, but I prefer "Roxie - Girl With Blade" for the vision I have of her.

Anyway, best of luck with your Roxie stuff, and actually, I had no idea you were planning on selling it.  If I'd known, I'd have risked my life a little more and told the one with the blade to watch her mouth a bit!

EClark1894 posted Mon, 14 April 2014 at 8:16 AM

Well, I could still just give the stuff away as a freebie, but I had to work to get into CP as a vendor, so i need products to sell. Besides i have four pages of freestuff for Roxie, Rex, Anastasia, Miki4, etc. Plus, being a vendor does several things that just givng stuff away can't do for you. Plus, it raises Roxie's profile a bit having  CP support her.

Also, Roxie will never have as many clothes and things as V4, but she might be able to pass other figures like Stephanie3, Luke3, Sadie, and Apollo.

toastie posted Mon, 14 April 2014 at 8:30 AM

Pity about the tutu. What went wrong? But at least most sets have the tutu as a separate piece and easy enough to scale to fit Roxie or Miki4.

(Don't forget to fix the shoes though! 😄 )

pumeco posted Mon, 14 April 2014 at 8:33 AM

I think my own goals weren't too different from yours.

It would be nice to earn money from vending stuff but I know that's not a reality for me or in fact most people.  The way I saw it was so that I could get an idea of how the whole vending thing works and any money I earn is just a bonus.  Even if I only sold one per month thats still one per month I wouldn't have sold if I'd not tried, and at least I'd have got a taste of vending in the meantime.

I'm glad you chose to sell this, vilters should do the same with some of his stuff.
Best of luck with it :-)

EClark1894 posted Mon, 14 April 2014 at 9:58 AM

Well, I wasn't making any money  making freebies either so the only thing that's really changed is that as a vendor I have to step up my game as far as producing quality stuff.

Toastie:

I just felt that I don't have the skills required (yet) to do the tutu right, so rather than just put out crap, I'll wait until I can do it right.

No, haven't drawn for years mate.

Like I said though, I miss it a heck of a lot.  I think I still have a bunch of drawings I did as a teen, somewhere in the attic, but they're nothing like the stuff I would like to be able to do (stuff like you posted).

Must be awesome to do stuff like Bisley etc.  Once I have a place sorted, I'll have to knock-up a nice big drawing-board for myself.  Wouldn't mind trying airbrushing as well, never done that and I like the look it gives.

She hasn't seen it yet, but she will as soon as she wakes up ;-)

Very cool, I like that 'out-of-the-dark' stuff.  I still have my Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils, they're awesome, and the softest in the set, the 8B, is an amazing pencil for getting deeeeeeeeep blacks.  Really amazing for graphite, it looks more like charcoal it's so black.

If you like doing dark backgrounds you should definitely buy a set of Staedtler Mars Lumograph (just in case you haven't tried them), even the smaller set has the 8B in it and there's a few set sizes out there.

Anyway, I'd better shut-up or the thread will go OT again.  No doubt Roxie will come along and say something though, just as soon as she's awake.  She got back just gone 3:00AM so no doubt a lot of Vickie culling went on last night!

pumeco posted Tue, 15 April 2014 at 8:08 AM

Out of curiosity I just looked on Amazon and found this set.  That price must be half the price I paid for my slightly larger set many years ago.  Only the design on the tin has changed and the font on the pencils, but that's an awesome set of pencils (and includes that amazing 8B):

Click for Staedtler Mars Lumograph

Anyway, back on topic ...

LOLOL. Nah. The rules are different for doctors. They "admire" all sorts of disgusting stuff (just browse a dermatology or parasitology site). It's only if they find the backside appealing that they get labelled.

I don't mean to imply that EC's behind is disgusting or anything. But "tax pain" is not a pretty or aesthetically pleasing affliction. I'm sure he'll recover soon enough, though. :)
