I have tried to make a skin texture but it seems to have a problem when rendered with the edges of the seam showing. I know it is probably because the edges of the texture don't match up. So I was wondering if anyone had an idea of how to fix this? I know I can paint a solid color over the edges so they match but how would I blend it into the rest of the texture? I use photoshop 7 by the way for it.

It's something that takes lots of practice. Since you can't paint ON the model (PS7), you should use what's called a seam guide which shows where the texture on one part meets up with the texture on another part so that you can match them. Depending on what figure it's for there "might" be a seam guide available. SnowSultan made some for all the Daz Generation 3 figures at least, but since I don't do skins, I sort of lost track if anyone else took up the cause for the more recent figures ;). Someone will come along with the pertinent info I'm sure.
edit: SnowSultan's been busy. Maybe you'll find what ya need here?
IF what you mean is that when you render you get a white seam around your texture edges, that's different and means you need to go over the edges of the template a little farther. I usually go at least 5px over the edges of templates with color just to be sure I don't get the white edges. When inside Poser, set the texture to Crisp if you have Poser 9 or 10.

Thanks, I actually do have a seam guide. I see where to match the texture, I just wanted to know if there is a quick and easy way to match the textures. I guess I can do a pattern stamp and just rotate the cloned stamp to fit right?

You could try using Blender. Yes, it's a complicated software to learn, (tho really not nearly as complicated as some would suggest, depending on what you're doing), but all you'd need to focus on mostly for this, would be importing a model and painting it, then saving out the maps. That way you don't have to worry about seams because you're painting the model directly, instead of trying to paint on a 2D image map and matching seams, which is virtually impossible to get 100% correct.
Just a suggestion.
There is other software that allows you to paint directly on the model too, but I don't know of any that are free other than Blender.

I second Ambientshade's suggestion. Do the basic groundwork in Blender, then save out the map and do the details, that don't cross the seams, in your 2d graphics application.

EDIT: Sorry, I misread. I thought you were getting a black/backround color seam...
3d painting tool like Zbrush is the way to go.

Try blacksmith 3d paint - http://www.blacksmith3d.com/
I think Redo own it now -You can paint right over the the seams and save them get the trial version to see if it works for you.
Cheers

I can't get zBrush to without streaks .
Wich polypainter will paint across a 90 degree angle and not streak?
I learned to map in Blender 2.70a in about 8 hours.

Anyone try 3d painting in PhotoShop CS5 or higher? It has some tools for the task but I wondered if it would be worth learning or if I should just try something else.

just my opinion: when you've got CS-Extended and use it for pre- and post work already, then you'd better max it out than learning something anew. Just covering the most of your workflow with the minimum amount of tools sounds good to me anyway.
And in case it doesn't completely bring what you want, you might want to know its limits - something to test again in a newer PS version.

I don't know how far I want to go either, probably just shy of the "point of no return" ;-)
I think I'd like to be able to lay down some basic shapes and guides in order to manage the seam issue the OP mentioned. I fiddled with it briefly, didn't click immediately, and kinda assumed it would be somewhat lacking compared to other tools.

PhotoShop,zBrush,MudBox,3DCoat ,blacksmith 3d paint etc etc will all paint on a 3D mesh.
but if you want more .
displacement maps, normal maps etc etc .
ya need to make sure ya app will do that.

I make warroirs & monsters ,what zBrush was made for.
I don't make dresses with pattern on them.
so I don't think about them when talking about texturing.
but I don't think zBrush would be the best app for pattern dresses.
Think Adobe or something like it would be the place to go for pattern dresses.
then again I don't know for sure ,just a guess.
