Partial render attached. What's causing the horizontal banding?

Scene contains two lights with intensities cranked up high:

Scene AO settings: max dist 1.0, bias 0.0002, samples 3, evaluate in light UNchecked

(My units are Poser Units)

The dragons skin has no texture or shader network applied, and the banding still appears (just above its left foreleg, so I assume it's nothing to do with the textures.

I'm 99% certain it's something to do with my AO settings. I often get weird shadowing along mesh lines (which usually indicates that I need to increase the AO bias), but I've never seen anything like this before.

I rarely use AO, since P10 doesn't need it- unless it's in a seperate rendering pass.  I'm fairly certain as well it's the settings...

Why are your lights set so high, might I ask?

The 180% for the IBL is based on this http://poser.smithmicro.com/tutorials/poser_IBL.html (I don't use HDR that much, so 180% intensity + 0.5 contrast seems a good start). The infinite was originally at 50%, but this was far too low compared to the IBL intensity, so I wound it up to 75%, 100%, 150% and ended up at 200%. I'll try dialling down

kalrua: That could be it - the effect in the first image looks sort-of similar, with distinct horizontal lines. I'll try increasing the irradiance catching.

(Alternative option: try using IDL instead of the diffuse IBL...)

Yep, increasing irradiance catching from 32 to 100 completely got rid of the banding (I only re-rendered two small rectangles to check - see the attached image ).

Many thanks.
