When I bring in an .obj file in Poser (which has a layer -base) it add a Preview layer to the object. How can I remove that layer so then I can save it as a prop with one layer (base)?

Please and thanks!

I don't think you can.  Poser will always add a Preview material to the OBJ when it's in Poser's workspace.  After you save the OBJ as a prop, the Preview material will be in the PP2 file along with your base mat.  You could then edit the PP2 file to remove the Preview material, but that won't help either.  When you load the prop, it will have a base and a Preview.

you re-assign desired material in group editor.  however, I agree with ock.

You can safely edit the preview material(s) out of a library file, as noted above. However Poser will re-generate it if it's not present. The preview material is used for such things as box-tracking mode, where the display is simplified for the benefit of less powerful computers. Not many users have need of that, nowadays; yet that old code from the previous millennium is still hanging around. ;)

hmm. thanks!

That answers that question but still leaves me with my problem. When I load my prop into Poser and apply a material to it sometimes it will ask what material layer to apply it to. How do I get the material to just apply to the base without Poser having to ask that question?

Please and thanks again!

Save the material as a material collection (even though it's only a single material you're saving). Poser will then associate the material with the name of the zone and shouldn't have to ask you.

However, Poser has never asked me that question so my experience may be lacking. It will help if you state which version of Poser you're using.

If it has more than one material available, when you load an MT5 from the Pose room, it will ask which one to apply it to. It has to. At least, it always has for me (and I don't want Poser to guess -- it's notoriously bad about coming to incorrect conclusions about materials, texture cross talk, etc, etc). It won't do it in the material room because, I assume that, well, you've already indicated your material zone selection.

That explains it. Simple old me always applies materials in the material room, because I can point at the zone I want to work on. :) (And I may want to mess about with a library material after I've applied it.)
