If V4 is your figure of choice, why are you still using her and what would make you switch to one of the other figures?

How long do you think you'll continue using her before you move on... if you ever do. At some point she's probably going to retire you know.

vilters posted Tue, 16 September 2014 at 2:12 PM

While I personally never uses V4 (only for doing tests) , she will stay for some years to come. Probably at least one or two decades more, probably longer.

Why?

Most end users are way over their head in V4 content investment.

And be honest? Is there a worthy alternative?

My Michelle? Dawn? Antonia? The Genesis series?

All combined and taken to the square, they do not have 1/100 of the V4 content available.

And what is even more serious.
The content market is saturated right now.
There is no gap to fill with a new figure and start all over again.

A new figure only has a chance to survive when she comes with the next generation of Poser users. The current onces depleted their wallets on V4.

That is the "WHY".

Vilters has hit the nail on the head.  The market saturation issue is the biggest elephant in the room.  If you aren't a Frazetta/Elvgren wannabe, there is less and less content to choose from.  And if you are a Frazetta/Elvgren wannabe, ask vendors the following question:

Why should I buy your hookerware outfit?  There is a lot of hookerware for V4 - what makes yours different?

I use V4 (with the SP4 proporiton morphs) for ethnic figures (Blackthorne's First Nations characters & Reciecups black figures - they rock!) in my storyboards.  They make up about 25% of my characters.

I have actually been moving away from her (and Dawn) and recasting characters with SM's figures.  I have a better selection of ages and ethnicities with them than the DAZ figures. The mesh "issues" aren't an issue with me because my characters keep their clothes on.

My biggest issue with the SM figures is a lack of morph sets for Rex & Roxie and the lack of Texture Transformer support.  Which is starting to look like another product that I have wasted my money on.

Jaager posted Tue, 16 September 2014 at 3:22 PM

Because of what Vilters said an investment in V4 content I have been digging around in the V4 CR2.  (I very much like (as with Dawn) being able to drive all bends and morphs from BODY and I am stuck once again doing methods research.)

Am I correct in thinking? =

the actor body Morphs section and link parms sections are DS components only? Can be deleted with no effect on the figure in Poser?

With V4WM - no V4.2++ JCM or magnets are needed (The 3 pairs of breast magnets may be worth keeping.)?

Is the PoserPlace V4WM conversion different from AlfaSeed conversion?  When WM converted, V4 is just as modern as any other figure in Poser?

One other aspect of V4 content though - with the functions in PP2014 -  Texture Converter (Blacksmith)  and Netherworks Hair conversion - much of V4 can be adapted to Dawn and Roxie  - and excluding textures most any other figure.

EClark1894 posted Tue, 16 September 2014 at 3:43 PM

I do like the variety that the SM figures offer, plus V4 is so freakishly tall around the others it makes using her over and over again in different character forms hard to do. Especially with figures like Alyson, Ryan, Rex and Roxie.

You could do what I do - use all of the figures.  When doing character development for my stories, I looking into both heights & ethnic breakouts before developing my characters.  For example:

Height wise - up to 15 percent of my figures are V4 and/or Dawn (for females).  Which matches the current world population.  The rest are Jessi, G2 Females, Miki 1-4 & SP4 (whose size makes up the majority of females on Earth).

You not only end up with a wide variety of body types, you have a bunch of very different looking figures - which is a very nice change from the cookie cutter look that comes with using just 1 figure.

I've come no where near reaching the limits of the V4 and M4 series.  I also have a lot of money tied up in clothes and figures.  If I ever reach the point where I'm running into the limitations of V4 I'll likely upgrade allthough I'd tend to go with Erogenesis's upcoming Project E.

grichter posted Tue, 16 September 2014 at 6:00 PM

I with the Vitters camp.

I have a boat load of items purchased for V4 over the years and a long list of renders I plan to use them in. If I wanted to trade out the list of scenes I plan to render to another character I would have to wait years to accumulate the invnetory to support those scenes for those characters.

If I was a vendor, nstead of making items for V4, G2 or Dawn, etal, I would be making places to place V4 in. Like a grocery store, drug store, pawn shop, curb side at an airport, bus station, 7-11's, nobody has done a real full department store interior that I know of yet...  to name some that just popped into my head. Then make add on packs to give them American, Euro, Japanese or even Chinese looking.

personally i use V4 because most of my content works on V4 (which many people have stated), i have customised V4 out of the ball park so she doesnt look like V4, and she does everything i require. i wont upgrade to Genesis as im not interested in trying to shoe horn a figure ment for another piece of software and then spending money time and effort on something that will be superceeded by yet another Daz offering that will not work too great in poser. The only way i will upgrade now is when someone makes a figure for a future version of poser that has some better way of making figures skin, joints, etc move and deform without the need for things like dson etc.... currently the market on figures seams to be on poly distribution and look and i dont need that

Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

If you want to discuss Poser figure development, how about creating a thread about it, so that no particular figures are the subject of the thread, that way it doesn't become a bashing contest.

Most of the points stated here have been repeated over and over, so a thread like this just becomes arguments and encourages negativity.

Same with the Dawn thread.

Not sure why you're asking. But I think the points have been pretty well covered.

My favorite female figure of choice, right now, is Loretta Lorez. :) I guess I should get the Poser game dev upgrade.

I'm with grichter. The vast majority of my purchases in the past year have been architectural and landscape.V4, 5, 6 + don't need any more penthouses or modern mansions. How about a 7-11?

I prefer interior and exterior scenes. Rendo's got a couple of Streetlife scenes that I've used in the past, and someone did a pretty decent mall interior, but Store interiors, movie interiors, are hard for me to find.

I assume the reason there are no store interiors is freaking uppity V4 only wears custom made clothes designed by artists and not off the rack!!!!

Once again, I've found a boutique store scene here at Rendo, by 3DC. It's not too bad, but I wanted more clothes, shoes, purses and handbags. Things like that. Who knows, maybe i will get around to doing one for Roxie, Rex and the other SM figures.

Poser is dividing in to two groups
V4 ease and those that like to mess with all kinda of tools and app's

V4 ease users will use V4 till the end of time.
The adventures will use all the meshes.

Will there ever be another 3rd party to make a charcter to join us all togeather as one as Vicky did ?

V4's my gal. For most of the reasons listed above, but the main reason is scaling in Poser.
IMO, no figure scales better on individual body parts, once you figure it out.

Using V4, V4wm, V4wmas, V4x&m, V4Lali. Each have their strong points.

estherau posted Wed, 17 September 2014 at 7:09 AM

I use V4. I would use another figure in preference if it could look a bit younger than V4, and if it looked really nice in many of the promos for addons, and of course if there were lots of addons.  Otherwise I'll stick to V4.

V4 needs something new to make her a shiny star again.

like when the sss shaders came out. was seeing some really nice characters for her.

like when the V4wm script came out of rdna,

V4wm kinda fizzled for me, never got around to using the outfitter script on all the clothes i have for her.  her wardrobe is ridiculous. the woman who never wears the same thing twice.

i was kinda hoping the market would offer ready made wm clothes for v4wm.  i think, if the market offered ready to wear wm clothes and hair for V4wm, I would start spending a lil more money on my Vicki again.  And she would need her M4wm buddy, too.

I always smile with the idea that V4 will retire at some point.  I truth it will only happen when something comes along that is so much better that is is worth making the jump, so really more like a redundancy than a retirement.

I have a V4 character that has 'grown up ' with me over the last six years.  In that time the figure has aged, gained an few wrinkles, tattoos and scars and has had more than one face lift.  Her skin tone is better but older, her nose is a slightly different shape and her body has toned up a little but she is still the five foot nothing heroine I started to create all those years ago.  I am a no good at modelling and only recently got my head around the basic nodes of the material room so she is a really mixture of other peoples textures (played with in Paint Shop Pro) and other peoples morphs, both in the face and body.  Many of the changes were a result of BBs suggestions here at Rendo, better SSS, more realistic eye reflection and so on.

Does this mean I will always use V4, maybe not but I need a reason to change.  Newer is not always better.  High tech maybe the goal of some but each time another warning light appears on the dashboard of my aging car and wish for the days of low tech.

V4 has been with me long enough to see me into retirement and there is a good chance she will be going strong when I take my next big journey.  Yes I am still looking but I have seen nothing yet to suggest V4 will vacate my renders for a long while yet.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

As an animator I find V4 animates quite well
and works natively will the free Daz studio lip synch plugin
and the Daz aniMate+ nonlinear motion system in DS
and the Morphs++ give the figure all the versatility I will ever need

I also still use P6 jessie and james  for animation projects with the awesome "jess one improved" morph set over at ShareCG
** **
""and what would make you switch to one of the other figures?"

if you are taking about the SM or hivewire figures et al the answer is a resounding ..nothing will make me switch.... period

I am still on poser 6 for ,reasons I have stated ad nauseum here,
and those other, frankly poor third party attempts to supplant DAZ V4 , offer nothing
useful enough to have me upgrade my poser application to use them

"How long do you think you'll continue using her before you move on.."
if you ever do."

if all goes according to my plan it is about another month before my new windows machine is aqquired and I make the jump to Daz studio 4.6 ,Realillusion Iclone and of course genesis 2 which is supported by Iclone for animation and lipsynching
and has 3D exchange pipeline options to send my animated character to Maxon Cinema4D for  final rendering

"At some point she's probably going to retire you know."

Says who??

the individual users decide if a figure is  to be retired or not
I still use Daz Mike2 with the Old Capcese boris morphs as I have not been able to accurately re create my digital  self clone with any of the other male figures
although I suspect I will likely  have success  doing this with the genesis 2 male when I draft it onto service next month.

V4 will retire when 3d software stops using polygons as the basis for modelling.

Otherwise, I think it's pretty safe to say that there will likely be software around that will permit you to load, pose, and render her.

I'm more worried that the continuing trend of populations away from desktop computing towards low powered mobile devices with microscopic screens will eventually leave desktop users priced out of the market.

But the large numbers of baby boomers who don't want to have to wear surgical loupes to use a computer will probably prevent that from happening in my lifetime.

Yes, I agree. Poser Pro 2014 allows me to fit clothing props on her with a mouse click. She bends like a dream, and as others have said, I've got quite a lot invested in her. After transitioning away from P6 Jessica of the Hideous Hands, I'm in no hurry to move all of my characters to a different mesh. I tried Genny using DSON, and while she works in Poser Pro, she didn't avail me an advantage over V4. So why bother?

Genny's clothes are really nice, though! I've seen a few outfits that I've thought would look really good, but its not been enough thus far to motivate a change -- particularly because I'd have the extra step of importing through DSON.

Mind you, on occasion I'll use Anastasia or some of the other figures in my runtime. These are usually reserved for background figures. The SSS skins I have for my main characters look far better than anything the stock PPro 2014 figures can boast.

All the girls in this image are V4, and all the boys are M4. For what I do, the figures work quite nicely.

I use V4 more than anyone else, although I do try to ring the changes from time to time. But there's no arguing with the mass of available content - for that I can overlook her various shortcomings, most of which can be postworked away anyway.

Another reason is that, although I have Poser 9, I don't really get on with it and prefer P7 when I want to get something done. Or to put it another way - no figure that needs P9 is sufficiently tempting to make me want to put in the effort required to persist with it.
