What is used in motion capture today? Could one build one from parts? I noticed that people at robotics (miniature self built robots) use cheap parts to calculate distance from wall etc. Could same technique be used in building a BVH file? I'm not interested in expensive hollywood gear. rather something like a hobbyist could build.

this is indeed interesting - but I doubt at least you need a datasuit to animate your poser-people correctly ... (oh - I need this only one day - lol) ... Maybe I'll make some animations next winter ...
