I get this error:
Could not complete your request because the layer is not a valid text layer
when trying to open certain PSD files. They open fine on a different pc.

what ver of PS are you using??
i thought Adobe fixed this issue back in ver 7!

are these PSD that you created or are they from another source? a lot of times PS will create a file and save it okay even though some font info is corrupted. Then when you open the file on another sys it throws up this error. (even though on some systems it opens just fine!!) - but like i said Adobe had fixed this awhile back...
anyway, there was a droplet Adobe posted the let you "drop" the file on and it would correct/fix the issue. not sure if it's still around...
i'll look around.

Try drag and dropping the image in a web browser.
After the browser opens the image, right click and save the image.
Then try opening it in Photoshop.
Another method:
You said that you can open it in paint.NET, you can open the image in paint.NET and do *save as...*and save it as a new file.
Then try opening that new file in Photoshop.
