Strong opinion:

When I look at the new Renderosity, I can't help but think of George Clooney's line from O Brother, Where Art Thou? "You two is dumber than a bag of hammers."

The site now ignores every impulse the artist has when looking for content or advice. The most important is software title segregation. Say I work in Poser, when I go looking for content, I don't want stuff for Max, C4D, Lightwave, DS, and other software shoved in my face to slow down the search for Poser stuff to an irritating crawl.

It's like someone was hired to increase sales, and they said, "You've got it all wrong. Spiff it up, make it look ultramodern, trendy, show everything together so that nothing gets ignored. Lots of WOW!"

I was around when this was just a forum back in the 90's. I saw what made it rise to the mainstream and work, and I see what is killing it. Someone is determined to drive this once wonderful site into its grave.

Driving nails in its own coffin. Dumber than a bag of hammers.

Don't sugar coat it.

Tell us what you really think.

You are being a bit more charitable than I am.

DreaminGirl posted Tue, 18 August 2015 at 9:34 PM

Makes you wonder if the development team has been taken over by moles from Daz, intent to get rid of the competition!
This new design is so bad even Daz looks appealing now :D

DreaminGirl,

Never attribute to malice anything that can be explained by incompetence.

@4220702

I do not understand why you all trample on DS and DS users. I am a DS user and I think we all are sitting in the same boat now. It does not matter if you use Poser or if you Use DS, the new site and the new gallery is a unreasonable demand to all of us.

I am also not lucky about the issue that DS new generation figures like Genesis, G2F and G2M and now G3F take over the market but that is an other issue and not renderositiys this is a vendor issue.

Though I am a DS user I still use a V4.2 based figure and M4 and not these new figures (don`t like them). And that is/was one reason why I spend more mone here at Renderosity for clothing and hair and stuff than at the DS markert place until now. Since Renderosity decided to kick us customers and artists in the ass I am not sure if I will spend much more money here and uploading new images to the "great and fantastic new" gallery is no option for me. I will NOT upload new images here. I now started a gallery at DS, never had one there even I use DS since I have started 3D rendering.

But I have to say, the gallery at DS is lightyears better than what we now have here at Renderosity.

Other thing. The DS market place and also the DS Gallery is much more structured and looks much more tidy and neat than what we have here now. So if "moles from DAZ" took over the development team you may have gotten a way better site than this right now.

Razor42 posted Thu, 20 August 2015 at 3:06 AM

I have to agree the Daz3D site leaves this site behind in more ways than just function and design.

DreaminGirl posted Thu, 20 August 2015 at 7:40 AM

I think some of you misunderstood completely.. I am not trampling all over DS or DS users. Nowhere in my post did I even mention DS! My POINT was that the Daz site had a makeover not too long ago, that many users, including me, was very unhappy with, and I still am. But THIS site is now so bad that the Daz site looks appealing in comparison. (And no, the 'new' Daz site is NOT a good design.) And obviously, if there were indeed any 'moles' from Daz working for Rendo they would obviously do their best to make it as bad as possible, so people would flee in droves, which they are.

Razor42 posted Thu, 20 August 2015 at 7:48 AM

Seems like trampling or actually more like Flame Baiting which is against the TOS.
Why even mention Daz, if you don't like the Rendo site design just say so.

DreaminGirl posted Thu, 20 August 2015 at 8:01 AM

@ Razor42
I did.. by comparing it to other sites that is natural to compare it against.. just like you did btw

Razor42 posted Thu, 20 August 2015 at 8:10 AM

Edit: Actually you know what... Whatever :)

DreaminGirl posted Thu, 20 August 2015 at 8:21 AM

Well, that certainly wasn't my intention. But by all means, if you feel my post was flame bait, report it and let the mods deal with it.
But SOME people need to let go of that knee-jerk reaction that automatically assumes malice as soon as Daz is mentioned, just saying.. Rendo and Daz is both in the same business, it is only natural they get compared.

Razor42 posted Thu, 20 August 2015 at 8:24 AM

Just like Poser and DS right? :)

Let's just let forget it, I have no intention of reporting anyone.
It just came across a little that way, that's all.
Let's just focus on hating on this new site design, ok? ;)
After all we wouldnt want the thread to go off topic :D

DreaminGirl posted Thu, 20 August 2015 at 8:39 AM

Whoah software wars.. don't go there ;)

But yes, let's just forget it, my original post was 'tongue in cheek', I guess some people didn't get it. No malice intended. (Oh and English is not my native tongue either)

The last site make-over of Renderosity made it harder to use, but I eventually fo8und ways to compensate, such as using the horizontal bar rectangle in my browser to rescale everything to 80%. It never really solved the problem of image bloat for promos, but it at least made it tolerable to view the market product pages and the PRIME pages.

This site has now taken the things I disliked about DAZ and brought them in AND in addition somehow managed to make itself even harder to view and navigate.

I have been saying for the last two years that Renderosity has gotten "click Happy," never failing to take the path of making more clicks to a purchase rather than less. To me ithas shown a fundamental disrespect of the artists and customers who participate and the value of their/our time spent on your site. Now, in addition, Rendo has decided to make me go through contortions just to view what are supposed to be the important marketing pages on the gosh-darned site??? Egads!!!

Even the basics were dumped here in the forum -hard to mess up you would think - in Renderosity's apparent zeal for change, perhaps just for change's sake.

What happened, for example, to the simple and basic tools to underline, resize, italicize, and make bold text here in the forum??? What, are we supposed to click on the "markdown" blue text, read it as if it were a privacy and terms of use statement and then become software programmers putting in assterisks in various numbers before and after the words we want to emphasize just to write a post???

Aren't most artists still working on a desktop or a laptop? I mean 3D needs horsepower. Or is it that the site is being designed for viewing on an iphone or something? The dysfunctional layout just doesn't make sense on my machine. It's not fun to read it's just hard. Assuming I'm not missing anything..... =>

Sorry guys, WORST LAYOUT TO DATE ! ! !

And I'm not talking aesthetics. Just fundamental usability.

creativeguy59 posted Thu, 20 August 2015 at 12:45 PM

Honestly. It is really bad. I showed this to folks at work we deal with web portals. The UI Designers (we hire specialists) were horrified. I test software I was horrified as I have the job to not only test our web portal applications but also ensure I am protecting the end user from stuff. This site failed that aspect... but we do have a tutorial coming out on how to navigate the site.

What rendo needs to do is stop trying to pretend it is glorious and start coming out with what they are going to do and how... even up to including backing to the previous revision at least and figuring that out ... rather than trying to do it with one hand trying to keep the pitchforks away... that goes a lot further to admitting you got a problem then sitting putting out tutorials to solve what isn't the real problem... bad site design. End goals aside for suppporting mobile / tablets better this isn't the right way to do it, time to fess up go back to the drawing board.

Rich Hall produced a nice variation on 'bag of hammers' - "You're dumber than a bag of wet mice".

I prefer the tried and true "dumber than a box of rocks" myself.

I still prefer hammers, because mice, dirt, and hair are very difficult to use to drive nails in coffins. Just saying...

One thing I have noticed is that modo users as a whole avoid this site, and modo has been my primary focus for years. My secondary studios, Lightwave and C4D, which I use primarily for specific clients, are also not heavily drawing their users here. So there is really nothing holding my loyalty here any longer. As this site deteriorates, as it has been doing for years, so does my interest in it.

My 3D library on hard drive, which began back in the 90's, is massive. I already have most everything I need to assemble scenes from content that others made. And I'll as often make what I need, instead of hunting for it elsewhere, as long as it's not too time consuming. And a lot of scenes that I create now are 100% from scratch. I don't amass content as I once did. The collecting habit for me now is pretty much a waste of time and drive space.

I will still occasionally download a Poser archive from the net because they use quadded OBJ as the base. But I am more prone to go for OBJ that hasn't been Poserized. And I like FBX too, which is modo import friendly more often than not. There are other sources online that are so much easier to search for quality content in these formats, both free and paid.

There is a lot of 3D content for which I have no use, Max, Maya, DS, Vue, Carrara, and so forth, because exporting to a format I can comfortably use is either financially prohibitive, or I don't want to do business with their companies because of policies with which I do not agree. The sites that draw my attention are those which allow me to easily ignore these formats and all the rest that I don't need.

I personally don't care what other people are using for 3D, as long as they are not sending me content for use in a project. If people want to use software made by companies that I find less than user friendly and refuse to support, that is their business. I don't dislike the users because they don't see what I see in the companies they support. (I usually find distaste in them because of attitude and blind loyalty, as 3D is so capable of doing to a person.)

I hardly come here any more, which is a shame. I supported this site for over 12 years. But the logic of the design began going downhill, and I gave up on it. And this latest move has made me feel repulsed to where I only come here because someone made a comment about Renderosity elsewhere. The feeling this site gives me now is counter to the creative inspiration that I am seeking. It's like getting hit in the face with a large, wet, dirty sponge. I just don't want to be here any more because of the way the site has been mismanaged.

I think that pretty much sums it up.
