Subject: Daz Studio runs slow?

Hi

I haven't used Daz Studio in a long time, but I thought that I'd give the new version a try.

I'm finding that it runs really slow, now I admit I don't know what I'm doing, it's like I'm starting all over. I'll work my way through the tutorials, when I get done just messing around with it..

Normally I use Poser Pro 2014, and I've used Poser since version 3..

The thing is that Daz Studio really runs painfully slow? When I drag something there is a really big delay before it moves, everything feels really laggy.

I have a very fast computer, i7 3.6 GHz, processor, Nvidia 680 video card, 32 Gigs of ram, Solid State Hard drive, liquid cooled processor etc. When I work in Poser things are almost instantaneous, no lag, I can render 300 frames of animation at full HD in a matter of minutes.

So why is Daz running so slow? Is there something that I need to configure to get it to run at a reasonable speed? It's hard going from a program that you know to one that you don't.

The few things that I've done look very nice, a quite different look then Poser.
But I can't imagine doing any animation (my main thing) at the speed that it runs, and I only have a figure in the scene, no set or props to render.

Hi MikeMoss if you have the mini preview port or the main display area set to IRay while you are setting up that will give the result you describe change it to another preview style and see if that helps. Sounds like it is calculating the render on ever move you make

Hi Mike

Are you using the Daz's Content management system the old version or the new PostgreSql CMS? The PostgreSql CMS is faster but I know I made the mistake and had both installed at the same time and it caused slow downs in my systen. If you used the Daz Install Manger and are using the older system there is a download for the newer one with a script to run to convert over all your content to the new CMS. There are a few tutorials on the Daz website that would walking you thru the steps if you need them. I hope this helps some

Hi

I think that's what I'm doing, where do I change the preview windows rendering options. I'm really a newb at this.

I think I'm running PostgreSql CMS I saw something like that installed, but I'll check it out.

As to having both installed, it could be, I had a lot of problems installing it, because I don't install my software on my C: drive, but it kept telling my it couldn't find things so I uninstalled everything a let it do it to the default locations.

I used the download manager and just installed everything.

It seems hard to use to me, but I forget how daunting Poser is for a new user. It seems much easier to me, but I've been using it for a zillion years.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I'll be back with more questions. LOL

@MikeMoss yeah tell someone who cares LOL LOL. Welcome to the Daz forum, there are some members on here that give answers regularly and what they don't know about Daz ain't worth knowing. My knowledge is born out of sufferance but I am happy to share my pain.

Hi

Just back to say that changing the preview rendering seemed to work. It's running much smoother now.

I'll experiment more tomorrow.

I do have a question though, where are the textures stored? I'm not even sure what format they are in, but I've looked and don't find them anyplace.

If you are refering to the surfaces ie skin/materials they can be adjusted via the surface tab. If you are refering to the supplied shaders library both Daz originals and Iray then they can be found in your content library.

The layout can be a little different depending on your option set but there is a node based editor similar to Poser. Click on the windows tab to choose options you wish to see as tabs

Materials/textures that come with products both default and additional options appear usually in the same folder as the product in your Smart/Content Libraries along side their wardrobe/prop files. Addons for certain wardobe/props under their own pack name. Layout is a little different but it is similar to Poser in general concept.Screenshot (346).png

Also worth checking in preferences, that the graphics card acceleration is on.

Hi

Thanks for the information. I'm actually looking for the physical image files for the textures.

I'd also like to know if there are templates available some place?

I've done my own textures for Poser for years, and I know where to find everything, but I can't seem to find the texture files for Daz. I'm assuming that If I create a texture and place it in the correct folder it will show up as an option someplace in the program.

I'l check on hardware acceleration.

One other question, where do I change where Daz stores my renders, I don't want them in my C: drive. I did manage to get the program itself installed in my Programs folder on drive D:, but it's still saving everything in my Users folder.

I had a lot of adventures last night, I got it set so that it only rendered part of my image, I got a white box that appeared on the screen that I couldn't get rid of, I got in full screen mode and couldn't get out, etc.

Sometimes I can find options that don't seem to be there the next time I look for them. I think I'm getting too old to learn new tricks.

Textures are generally where they are in Poser - /Runtime/Textures in the installation folder.

RHaseltine posted Thu, 17 September 2015 at 4:27 PM

To change the location of your Render Library use the Render Library pane's option menu (lined button in the top corner, or right-click the tab) to open the Render Directory Manager which lets you add or remove folders. You can also use the button in the Render window itself to switch from using a library to using folders and just ignore the Render Library feature. Similarly, the Content Directory Manager accessible through the Content Library pane's option menu will let you add and remove content directories. You can move the location of the temp folder in Edit>Preferences (Windows, on Macs Preferences is in the DAZ Studio menu).

I'm really confused, I watched a video on how to install content etc. Then I looked and my installation and can't find a Content, Runtime, or Textures folder?

Here's a screen shot of my Daz Studio installation structure...

Daz Installation Map.JPG

I ran a search using Agent Ransack, (it will find anything) and didn't find any of these folders.

The program opens and runs fine so I have no idea what's going on. I'd uninstall and start over but I don't find a uninstall option anyplace, it doesn't show up in my installed programs list, which is weird in itself.

Hi

I figured out that I uninstall using the Download Manager, I've completely uninstalled everything, cleaned up the Registry and rebooted. Now I'm reinstalling everything again.

We'll see what happens this time.

OK, after reinstalling everything to the default location on my C: drive I have found that the Content folder ended up in my C:... Users... Pubic... Documents... My DAZ 3D Library... etc.

Well now that that is figured out, I'll have to figure out how to add content here.

I guess that the best bet it to just add the stuff manually instead of trying to unzip to the weird location.

I'll add something and see if it shows up.

Also weird, I kept putting Back Slants in the address I typed above ant the forum keeps removing them, so I just put dots... in instead.

Content doesn't go in the application folder as, generally, since Windows Vista that is a protected location. Public Documents makes the content available to all accounts, DS will also use DAZ 3DStudioMy Library in your own Documents folder as the default location for saved files.

MikeMoss posted Fri, 18 September 2015 at 10:51 PM

Hi

I'm making some progress, I did add some content manually and it did appear in Daz Studio. I'm gradually finding out where the controls are.

It does seem like things are easier to find in Poser where what ever you click on becomes the active object and the options are all right in the windows in one place.

I haven't got to the animating part yet, but I remember that when I tried Daz before there was a neat walk animation system that let you add movements to the timeline placing turns etc, where you wanted them, and they the character would walk the path.

Since animation is one of my main things I'm looking forward to trying that out again.

I haven't figured out if Mimic is incorporated into the new Daz or not. I used Mimic for years to do lip-sync in Poser, but the built in Poser app works well enough to use that now.
