The five nominees will play as a group in theaters starting 29Jan. Here in Houston, its at the Sundance, a downtown multiplex which shows "special" films like these. I've been attending these shows for years, and have seen some really great animation, e.g. "Mr. Hublot", the 2014 winner. Some discussion and excerpts here:

Here is an article about all fifteen short film nominees, including live action and documentary. The three categories run about 90 minutes each and typically show separately, in the case of Houston the documentaries show at a different theater.

Glad you folks enjoyed the posts. We attended the screening last night and, as you might guess, were very impressed. My favorite is "Bear Story" from Chile, very clever animation reminiscent of "Mr. Hublot" (2014 Winner). It had some of my favorite elements, steampunk vibe, great cityscapes, and especially no dialogue. Here is the film's website including trailer, director's statement, etc:

We also attended the live action screenings, three of the five were pretty grim subjects. All were well done, as you would expect, just kind of a downer overall. I preferred the two lighter films, "Ave Maria" and "Stutterer", here are the trailers:

Just a hobbyist. I like to use Carrara and a large collection of elements (characters, scenes, props - mostly Poser format - plus music, sound effects, special effects, etc.) to make short animations. Here is my YouTube page:

This one minute animation is one people seem to like:

@Steve K. Excellent work!!

Thanks. As Old Lodge Skins said in the 1970 movie, “Little Big Man”, “Sometimes the old magic works works, sometimes it doesn’t.” In the case of "Space Cadet Luther", I got some excellent feedback from other 3D folks on an early version, a big help. In many cases, I've got a deadline for a contest or something, and don't have that luxury.

@Steve K. Here is a Rendo animator poisinivy she shares the same passion. Since I have been here I have always said we are a couple of hundred animators shy of the mark here at Rendo. Of course if another 200 turned up I would still say the same as you can never have too many. Keep up the great work I will subscribe to your channel Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I've exchanged posts with Ivy, although its been a while. Fun stuff in her animations.

Thanks for the kind words. Did I miss a link to your animations?

LPR001 posted Tue, 02 February 2016 at 8:34 PM

Ivy does a great job. I did not put my link to my animations as I am staff here and my site is commercial I always felt that can appear a little self serving coming from me on the walls of the forums. I will send you a link to your sitemail.

I was listening to Todd Snider's song "Tension" this morning and it reminded me why I like the Oscar shorts. Mostly because they are refreshingly different, not standard Hollywood fare, with all the cliches, dreary stock characters, predictable ending, etc. The song has this spoken lyric:

After the bad guy killed off all the underdeveloped characters The good guy put a bullet right through his head The screenwriter stood up and told us that all the loose ends had been tied, justice is irrelevant Violent problems need violent solutions 'Cause in America we like our bad guys dead It's called box office, baby

Agreed. Pixar is good, especially some of their shorts like "Jack Jack Attack", a favorite of mine. But this one is every bit as good.
