Hey guys, Today we published an infographic about low polygon 3D models on cgtrader.com, which can be accessed here: https://www.cgtrader.com/blog/low-poly-3d-models-vr-and-you-how-to-ride-the-wave-in-2016
It also has an accompanying white paper with additional comments and in-depth insights. With the growing industry interest in virtual reality both in terms of content and hardware news, CGTrader has looked at our own data regarding the performance of game-ready, or low-poly, 3D assets. Interesting information, thanks for the link.
As the hardware becomes more powerful, and the software becomes more sophisticated, both at a blistering pace, I feel that the polygon count will climb as folks demand more realism and what we now call high poly, will become mainstream. Any standard practices are a moving target as the technology advances.

Nice article, and thanks for posting. Whilst I don't doubt VR will creep into gaming and other aspects of life, surely there must be still plenty of low poly models still around.

Low poly isn't going anywhere, as there is obviously still plenty of demand for it. However, there is low poly, and then there's "next gen" low poly, but it isn't actually identified which type we are talking about here. I'm going to assume since most of the low poly models on CGTrader are actually next gen assets, this is what is selling best. These would be models typically derived from very detailed, high poly sculpting and subD modeling and projected on low poly proxies with exceptional and detailed PBR maps for realistic real-time results.
