I onto my next large project. Some of you know of a wonderful artist named John Harris. I have re-imagined one of his paintings call MASS the building of FTL1. I was doing a little more research on him when I cam across a painting he did for a book cover titled Spindrift.
Re-working a painting is an interesting process and artform in itself. I love this image so I am giving it a shot. As usual per previous projects I have worked on, I will post in this thread as I make progress.

I will not post an image of the original painting in this thread given I don't know what kind of copyright issues may exist. However, if you look at my progress after the first day, I'm sure you can find the original reference. The first day of working on a project like this is very difficult. The primary shapes need to be established as well as a camera position, focal length, and initial geometric sizes and depth. It's not easy to get all these things to come together!

And here is the third day of work. As can be seen, I have decided to work on the main supporting pylons first. Soon, I will be done with that part and will move on to the ship. It's working!

To use an evolved program, one needs a minimum of intelligence, DAZ Studio is made for the other category of users… Nice work Kixum !

Carrara modeling is not for everyone. That is why Eovia brought in Amapi 7, back in the day. And Hexagon would later come from Amapi. 3D modeling in Hexagon comes more naturally for some artists. Programs like modo have made that simple modeling style much more complicated at the other end of the spectrum. Carrara and 3DCrafter are at one end, while modo and Lightwave are at the other. Simple 3D modelers like Hexagon and Silo are in the middle of the spectrum. 3D-Coat is closer to modo than it is to Carrara.

Carrara modeling is a little bit unique. I have been doing it for a long time and I use it basically because it's something I know and I can get results from it.
I have now basically put in all of the fundamental structures. Now it's a matter of texture and small details. I am going to have to stare at this thing for a few days to fill in the blanks.

By the way, thanks for all the feedback! Carrara is used a lot for rendering content but I render only my own content I build (probably one of the very few).

At this point in time I am doing my best to learn Blender and 3D Max

Here is day 5. The changes are subtle but make a difference. Hand rails, more surface details, and some dialing in some of the textures. Soon, I am going to give up and call it!

Well if you can afford 3ds Max, then you have one of the best modelling software right there, and very lucky! Blender is also a great modelling software. Have a look at Luxxeon tutorials, and you can make comparison between the two. He does objects in 3ds Max and then the same in Blender.
Kixum, very good job!

Thanks again for all the comments. I have decided to call it and here's where I ended up. You can also find the same render in the gallery.
