I'm using Images as Planes for templates (front, side, back) in making a 3d figure. How can I make the planes semi-transparent? Using Blender 2.76

Create another texture and set it to your alpha map. Set the Influence to Alpha. Then, in the Material tab, enable Transparency and reduce the Alpha amount.
It is better to do one thing well, than to do many things and excel at nothing.

Also, under Addons in Preferences, you can find the Import-Export: Import Images As Planes. With this extension, you can import images automatically as planes, and set specific material presets, such as transparency.
https://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Extensions:2.6/Py/Scripts/Add_Mesh/Planes_from_Images
This is available in the Addons of all new releases of Blender since 2.6.
